Treats for Tricks And Happy Howl-o-ween!
Not sure if your dog digs wearing Halloween costumes or not? Look for these clues:
If your dog starts dancing and begging for a TV agent for his own reality show, chances are good that he adores dressing up.
If your dog hangs his head and seeks refuge in the dark corner of your bedroom closet, chances are good that he prefers sporting his collar and ID tags - only.
Ensure your pet enjoys a safe - and sane - Halloween - by heeding these tips:
- Stash the bowl of chocolate goodies for the trick-or-treaters out of paw's reach. Chocolate can be downright deadly to dogs and cats.
- Exercise your dog during the day to unleash some of his energy before Halloween night.
- Opt for battery-operated candles in pumpkins instead of lighted ones to prevent singed tails.
- Don't be a litter bug - dogs can get injured from swallowing foiled candy wrappers.
- Tuck your pets inside an enclosed room like a bedroom with their favorite toys, treats and bedding during Halloween parties.

In less than 5 minutes, look at the mountain of hair I brushed from my dog, Chipper and my cool cat, Murphy.
Sharing your home with a dog or cat can be a hairy situation. I stock my house with plenty of hair-picking tape rollers and keep my vacuum cleaner humming. How about you?
We generally tolerate pet hair on our sofas, bedspreads and favorite black pants because of the many benefits our pets bring us. They adore us even on bad hair days. They make us laugh. They could care less if we're a rock star or just collect rocks.
Win a powerful ally in your ongoing pet fur battle. The first to respond correctly to the following quiz, based on new research from BISSELL Homecare Inc., wins a free Bissell Pet Hair
Eraser Vacuum from the fine folks at BISSELL. That's a $199.99 value!
1. On average, how much time do Americans spend each week to cleaning up after their pets?
- 12.4 hours
- 6.4 hours
- 1.4 hours
- What? I thought I had a self-cleaning pet.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Surfers Patrick Ivison and Ricochet
Each newsletter, Arden shines the spotlight on a "top dog" or "cool cat" in the pet world. This month, we salute Patrick Ivison, a quadriplegic surfer and his pal, Ricochet, a Golden Retriever aka Rip Curl Ricki. Together, they are "surfin' for paws-abilities" and wowing crowds up and down the California coast. Patrick is a high school sophomore who suffered a C4/5 spinal cord injury as a toddler in a freak car accident. His goal: to walk on stage to accept his diploma when he graduates in two years.
Ricochet was on course to become a service dog, but just couldn't curb her quest to chase birds. Instead, she became a SURFice dog, helping raise money and awareness for Patrick and other disabled individuals.
"I stopped focusing on what Ricochet couldn't do and started focusing on what she can do," declared Judy Fridono, proud pet parent who is also a certified professional dog trainer Catch Patrick and Ricochet surfing by clicking HERE. Callie's Ninth Life
Saying goodbye to our pets is never easy. Callie, my 15-year-old calico, developed a fast-growing mass in her pancreas and died Oct. 8. All signs pointed to pancreatic cancer. Highlights of Callie's "professional" life included flying to NYC to appear on national TV and being my feline sidekick on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA for a talk to members of the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters. In tribute - and to help others coping with ailing pets - I created a 10-part video series on YouTube called "Callie's Ninth Life." The episodes capture the happy and touching moments of Callie and her pet pals, Murphy, Cleo and Chipper. To watch this series, please go to: www.youtube.com/user/ArdenMooreKnowsPets.
And remember, our departed pets are gone but never forgotten. |
