Greetings!

Pema ChodronKick off your Memorial Weekend in a joyful way. This Friday we will listen to Session 10 in our series by Pema Chodron, Noble Heart. Topic: Joyful Exertion (virya), one of the six perfections (paramitas).

EXCERPT:
"The essence of the Exertion Paramita is joy: the delight we take in applying the teachings to our lives. When we begin to integrate what we learn  through studying and contemplating into our everyday experience -- into our depression, our resistance, our frustration -- we're moving closer to understanding the root of happiness. Therefore, we feel joy in doing the things that wake us up."

In my experience, this is a kind of joy that goes beyond the momentary reactions of happiness, sadness, pleasure or pain. It becomes a stream that underlies all experience, allowing you to greet the arising moment with presence.

NEW! You can download the weekly handouts from the whole series at a hidden page on our website, for your eyes only. To visit this page, click here. The page also includes a link for buying the CD series from Amazon. If you use this link, Luminous Mind receives a small percentage of your purchase.

Hope to see you this Friday night! We'll start with meditation, then listen to the teaching, and then discuss.

Quote

The times when you are suffering can be those when you are open, and where you are extremely vulnerable can be where your greatest strength really lies.

Say to yourself: "I am not going to run away from this suffering. I want to use it in the best and richest way I can, so that I can become more compassionate and more helpful to others." Suffering, after all, can teach us about compassion. If you suffer, you will know how it is when others suffer. And if you are in a position to help others, it is through your suffering that you will find the understanding and compassion to do so.
