Pema ChodronFriday night we will finish watching Pema Chödrön's DVD, "The Four Noble Truths and the Path of Meditation."

The final tip from Ken McLeod below is resonant with the Five Elements teachings we have been working with this year. Next week we will move forward in the book to the Six Realms of Experience.

Practice tip from Ken McLeod

Four Instructions of Gampopa

Let my heart turn to practice.

Let practice become a path.

Let this path dissolve confusion.

Let confusion become wisdom.

Let confusion become wisdom.

What is the result of practice? Where do you end up?

Confusion arises as wisdom

When something makes you angry, you drop open into mirror-like clarity. You don't decide to drop into clarity. You don't choose to make confusion arise as wisdom. It just happens. The momentum of your practice makes it possible.

When you are angry, your mind is crystal clear.

When you are in love, every detail stands out.

When you are bewildered, everything opens.

When you are jealous, you know what to do.

When you are proud, you know you aren't special.

You may or may not notice that your whole relationship with life has changed.

When you are angry, you know

A line has been crossed.

You reset the boundary,

But not to oppose.

When you are greedy, you know

A part of you feels desperate.

You take care of your needs,

And no more than that.

When you are running on automatic, you know

You can't take it all in.

You take stock,

And focus on what is most important.

When you want something, you know

A connection is broken.

You reconnect,

And you let others be who they are.

When you are jealous, you know

What moves and inspires you.

You get down to work,

And don't make it a competition.

When you are proud, you know

there is something you are ignoring.

You start asking questions,

But you aren't obsessed.

Your own reactions are now a source of wisdom.

When you tense up, you are off balance -- you open to everything.

When you are overly accommodating, you are feeling attacked -- you become curious.

When you are too insistent, you are feeling alone -- you reconnect with the world.

When you are in your head, you are needlessly complicating matters -- you focus on what needs to be done.

When you are all over the place, you are overwhelmed -- you come back to your body.

An altogether different kind of awareness is available to you, non-conceptual, immediate, some might say intuitive. A deep peace underlies everything. The old rules are gone. Possibilities seem limitless.

Now you start your life all over again.

Quotation

There is nothing true anywhere,

The true is nowhere to be seen;

If you say you see the true,

This seeing is not the true one.

-- Abraham Lincoln

Let's wake up!
