Greetings!

This week: Wake Up to Your Life

This Friday night we continue to discover the fire element in terms of working with our reactive patterns. Do you ever notice reactions that involve desire, consuming intensity, feelings of aloneness, or feeling burned out? Do you long for a sense of knowing? Come discover how fire is a metaphor for some of the mysterious processes we experience, and how to work with it.

Two Tracks

We have now begun having two tracks for Friday nights:

  • First and third Fridays -- Wake Up to Your Life continuing with Ken McLeod's profound and pragmatic methods extracted from the direct awareness methods of Tibetan Buddhism.
  • Second and fourth Fridays -- Buddha's Basics focusing  on meditation and subjects that are foundational to Buddhism. We began last week by studying Buddha's life up through enlightenment. Next week we will continue from his enlightenment on to the end of his life.
In Memory of Cosette (Cozy)
January 1, 1995 - April 9, 2011

Cozy As many of you know, my beloved toy poodle, Cozy, passed on Saturday afternoon after an extended illness. She was a bright spirit and a wonderful companion for 16 years. She was a fixture at dharma study at my house for all these years and has given and received a lot of love from our members, as well as received many lama blessings. I'll be honoring her during the traditional 49-day bardo period and ask you to join me in wishes for her to have a smooth transition and an auspicious rebirth.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 28, when her ashes will be scattered. More information to come.

Mountain
Earth Element / Earth Dakini

Earth is shape, form, substance, support, and structure. Too strong and it leads to rigidity, which imprisons. Too weak and it leads to instability or lack of substance, and things never take shape. In reaction, rigidity is often a cover for uncertainty. In response, earth is nurturing, supportive, and free from judgement. Wisdom of Equality / Balance.

 Water

Water Element / Water Dakini

Earth is about flow, fluidity, emotions, adapting. Too strong and it feels like a threat, a wave or current that will carry you away. Too weak, and there is no sense of connection or flow: things are frozen. In reaction, water is evasive, wishy-washy, difficult to pin down. In response, water is clear and transparent. Wisdom: mirror-like.

 fire element

Fire Element / Fire Dakini

Fire is about heat, warmth, light, passion, and knowing. Too strong and it burns, consuming everything it touches. Too weak, and nothing happens, and all is desolate. In reaction, it turns everything to ash. In response, it warms, motivates, provides the energy for things to happen.

Check out the Five Elements Gallery on Ken McLeod's Ning site. It includes audio clips of Ken leading each of the five dakini practices, which is a great way to learn the practice at home. Also included are an art gallery of related images and summaries of each of the elements.

Resources for the Dakini Practice have been posted here:

Quote of the Week

The assimilation of all experience to the one taste:
in the imaged field of empty delusive appearances,
whatever appears, let it rest in its uncontrived singularity,
and in that moment it dawns only as brilliant emptiness.

In the empty scope of myriad self-dissolving thoughts and visions,
whatever moves, relax and let it alone, just as it falls,
and contemplation of reality arises within the movement.
In the moment when mind and objective field are seamless sameness,
relax into its aimless, traceless, natural purity,
and internal luminosity shines as heightened pristine awareness.

When those three key functions are assimilated to a single essence,
realization and nonrealization are always the same,
mind and its field are one in pure being,
glitches and veils are the one in the dynamic of sameness,
and without intermission, we enter upon the natural state,
without tightness or looseness, we discover the definitive essence,
without a break, we abide in the reality-dynamic,
and willy-nilly there's no transition or change.
