Greetings!

Tomorrow night we launch into Ken McLeod's Dakini Practice -- a unique method for taking apart reactive patterns. It is introduced in Chapter 6 of Ken's Book, Wake Up to Your Life. (New books are in for $13.) We will begin the evening with sitting meditation, then learn the Earth Dakini / Earth Element practice.

From the Wake Up to Your Life study guide:

Reactive patterns are mechanical processes that operate when situations trigger associations with past events. They cause you to react to the present situation on the basis of past conditioning, not on the basis of what is happening now.

What happens in you when the result of a conversation is different from your intention?
  • Become rigid (Earth)
  • Connect with the other person in order to influence his or her views (Fire)
  • Become angry or seethe inside (Water)
  • Talk about other subjects to avoid discomfort (Air)
  • Fall into confusion or despair (Void)
What other ways could you act? What prevents you from seeing other options in the moment?

Resources for the Dakini Practice have been posted here:

It includes handouts, additional books for study (with links to Amazon), and links to Ken's podcast retreat on the Five Dakinis / Five Elements.

    Earth Element / Earth Dakini

Earth is shape, form, substance, support, and structure. Too strong and it leads to rigidity, which imprisons. Too weak and it leads to instability or lack of substance, and things never take shape. In reaction, rigidity is often a cover for uncertainty. In response, earth is nurturing, supportive, and free from judgement. Wisdom of Equality / Balance.

    Quote of the Week

"To integrate meditation in action is the whole ground and point and purpose of meditation. The violence and stress and the challenges and distractions of this modern life make this integration urgently necessary.

How do we achieve this integration, this permeation of everyday life with the calm humor and spacious detachment of meditation? There is no substitute for regular practice, for only through real practice will we begin to taste unbrokenly the calm of our nature of mind and so be able to sustain the experience of it in our everyday lives.

If you really wish to achieve this, what you need to do is practice not just as occasional medicine or therapy but as if it were your daily sustenance or food."
