Greetings!

This week classes are being offered both Wednesday and Friday nights.

Wednesday Nights at FUUN -- 7:00 - 8:30 pm
We continue a six-week class on the Six Perfections at First Unitarian Universalist Church on Wednesday nights. This week's topic is the Perfection of Patience: the practice of developing ease with whatever arises. This is regarded as one of the most important practices in Buddhism, especially for aspiring bodhisattvas.

Here is the exercise for reflection on patience:

  • We often get impatient because there's something we don't want to experience or that we're afraid of experiencing. This week, when you find yourself being impatient, look to see if there is something you are avoiding experiencing. The real answer may be several layers deep, so keep asking.

    Friday Night Dharma Study -- 7:00 - 9:00 pm
  • We continue with Ken McLeod's podcast on karma, Awakening from Belief. This week's topic: Patterns as personality.
  • Includes: The characteristics of patterns (mechanicality, resonance, crystallization, habituation, layering, webbing), patterns, personality, presence. Meditation instruction on physical reactions when a reactive pattern begins to run.

    Donations Appreciated

Please join us for this special event in Nashville, the dharma flame transmission to Lisa Ernst by her teacher, Trudy Goodman of InsightLA.  This ceremony is in recognition of Lisa's dedicated years of dharma practice and celebrates her connection to the lineage of authorized teachers who have carried the flame of dharma across the centuries and down the generations. This is the first such transmission in Nashville and will have a uniquely Western 'one dharma' flavor, reflecting the diverse practice backgrounds of both Trudy and Lisa. The ceremony will include a dharma talk on the meaning of transmission, and an opportunity for audience participation. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The ceremony will be held in the Clyde and Mary Room at Nashville's Scarritt Bennett Center located at 1008 19th Ave. South. The center provides ample parking onsite. There is no fee for this event, but donations are appreciated to help cover travel and event costs.

Trudy Goodman is currently the founding teacher of InsightLA in Los Angeles, where she teaches with the blessings of her teachers in the Theravada lineage from: Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA, and Insight Meditation Society in Barre, MA. Trudy is passionate about embracing both relational and transcendent perspectives so that the teachings encompass the fullness of our humanity.

Lisa Ernst began her meditation practice in the late '80's in the Zen Buddhist tradition, studying closely with two Rinzai Zen Masters. Lisa has also studied and practiced in the Theravada tradition since the late 90's. In 2005 she was given authorization to begin teaching by Trudy Goodman. Lisa organizes and leads meditation retreats and has taught meditation in corporations and prisons.

    Quote of the Week

As Buddha said: "What you are is what you have been, what you will be is what you do now." Padmasambhava went further: "If you want to know your past life, look into your present condition; if you want to know your future life, look at your present actions."
    The Six Perfections:
    The Bodhisattva Path of Awakening

First Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashville

Wednesday nights through November 3 · 7:00-8:30 pm

FUUNFireside Room (in the main building)

According to Mahayana Buddhism, awakened mind naturally manifests in our experience as the Six Perfections: generosity, ethics, patience, effort, meditation and wisdom. Practicing the perfections as path puts us in touch with our own humanity, which gives us compassion for others, allowing wisdom to arise naturally.

Join Rita Frizzell as we explore one of the perfections each week:
    Sept. 29 -- Introduction & Generosity
    Oct. 6 -- Ethics
    Oct. 13 -- Patience
    Oct. 20 -- Joyful effort
    Oct. 27 -- Meditation
    Nov. 3 -- Wisdom

If you want to come for dinner, join us at 6:00 in the social area near the sanctuary. $7 for dinner, no cost for class.
    Childcare provided.

Location: 1808 Woodmont Blvd near the intersection of Woodmont and Hillsboro in the Green Hills area of Nashville. The entrance is on the rear side of the church, near the top of the hill (on the northwest side). To get to the Fireside Room, enter the door on the left and continue down the hall and to the right. For questions, call Rita at 615-463-2374
    Let's wake up!
