2009-2010 SignsThe Buddha
A Film by David Grubin

Note: I will record this documentary and we'll watch and discuss it Friday night, April 9. It will make a great entry into our next series.

The Buddha, a film by David Grubin, premieres April 7, 2010 at 8 p.m. EST on PBS stations nationwide. The film, according to PBS, is a two-hour documentary by award-winning filmmaker David Grubin.

The story will be narrated by Richard Gere, and tells the story of the Buddha's life, a journey especially relevant to our own bewildering times of violent change and spiritual confusion.

"The program was produced in conjunction with the exhibition Pilgrimage and Buddhist Art, organized by Asia Society Museum, New York. The companion website for The Buddha will feature the work of some of the world's greatest artists and sculptors, who across two millennia, have depicted the Buddha's life in art rich in beauty and complexity."

Wake Up to Your Life:
Discovering the Path of Buddhist Attention

Beginning April16

For the first time ever, we will read and practice our way through a book together. And not just any book. Wake Up to Your Life has been used as the curriculum for  three-year retreats in the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Written by Ken McLeod, it is the first thorough curriculum penned by a Westerner thoroughly trained in the Tibetan ways. Written with incredible precision and freshness, the book clearly details how to cultivate a life of attention and break through habitual patterns... all while being very accessible to anyone, no matter their background. It's truly a remarkable achievement.

We are hoping to invite Ken to Nashville next year, and he said it would be helpful if we have a core group who are familiar with his method. He was happy to hear we are going to work our way through the book. I'm also in touch with a small network of Wake Up to Your Life study groups around the world for additional resources.

We will gather to listen to Ken reading the book via audio CD, but I encourage everyone to purchase the book for your own personal use.

Click here for a full description and link to purchase the book.

Quote of the Week

The way of the Buddha is a living response to a living question. Yet whenever it has become institutionalized its vital response has become a well-formulated answer. The seemingly important task of preserving a particular set of answers often causes the very questions which gave rise to those answers to be forgotten. Then the lucid answers Buddhism provides are cut off from the stammering voice that asks the questions.
