Greetings!
Tonight's dharma study begins to take us into rarely heard territory -- pointing-out instructions on the nature of mind. Ken summarizes these instructions which originate in dzogchen and mahamudra in a very accessible way, as a method of releasing emotional reactions.
Topics: Taking original mind, direct awareness, as the basis, all experience as the expression of awareness, instruction in a five-step process based on direct awareness (mahamudra and dzogchen), cautions and pitfalls.
Last week was questions and answers so it wasn't transcribed. Transcripts of the previous two talks are now posted on the blog, along with links to the podcasts so you can listen for yourself.
Date/Time: Friday, 7:00 -9:00 p.m.
Location: Home of Rita Frizzell in the Belmont/Hillsboro neighborhood, 1716A Linden Avenue, Nashville, TN 37212. 615-463-2374. Click here for map.
Note: I came down with a cold on Monday but am on the recovery upswing now, just left with a cough. I don't expect that I'm very contagious at this point but will minimize contact tonight to protect everyone's health.
Next Series: Wake Up to Your Life: Discovering the Path of Buddhist Attention Beginning Early April
For the first time ever, we will read and practice our way through a book together. And not just any book. Wake Up to Your Life has been used as the curriculum for three-year retreats in the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Written by Ken McLeod, it is the first thorough curriculum penned by a Westerner thoroughly trained in the Tibetan ways. Written with incredible precision and freshness, the book clearly details how to cultivate a life of attention and break through habitual patterns... all while being very accessible to anyone, no matter their background. It's truly a remarkable achievement.
We are hoping to invite Ken to Nashville next year, and he said it would be helpful if we have a core group who are familiar with his method. He was happy to hear we are going to work our way through the book. I'm also in touch with a small network of Wake Up to Your Life study groups around the world for additional resources.
We will gather to listen to Ken reading the book via audio CD, but I encourage everyone to purchase the book for your own personal use.
Mind itself is utterly without root, like space. Just as space does not refer to the nature of space, Nor can awareness be pointed out by illustrations.
