Topics include: Taking emptiness and compassion as the framework, difference between actual and projected experience, working with actual experience, instruction in five-step method that uses taking and sending (tonglen) to release emotional reactions.

Date/Time: Friday, 7:00 -9:00 p.m.

Location: Home of Rita Frizzell in the Belmont/Hillsboro neighborhood, 1716A Linden Avenue, Nashville, TN 37212. 615-463-2374. Click here for map.

Wake Up to Your Life:
Discovering the Path of Buddhist Attention

Beginning Early April

For the first time ever, we will read and practice our way through a book together. And not just any book. Wake Up to Your Life has been used as the curriculum for  three-year retreats in the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Written by Ken McLeod, it is the first thorough curriculum penned by a Westerner thoroughly trained in the Tibetan ways. Written with incredible precision and freshness, the book clearly details how to cultivate a life of attention and break through habitual patterns... all while being very accessible to anyone, no matter their background. It's truly a remarkable achievement.

We are hoping to invite Ken to Nashville next year, and he said it would be helpful if we have a core group who are familiar with his method. He was happy to hear we are going to work our way through the book. I'm also in touch with a small network of Wake Up to Your Life study groups around the world for additional resources.

We will gather to listen to Ken reading the book via audio CD, but I encourage everyone to purchase the book for your own personal use.

Quote of the Week

"Whatever thoughts and emotions arise in meditation, allow them to rise and settle, like the waves in the ocean. Whatever you find yourself thinking, let that thought rise and settle, without any constraint. Don't grasp at it, feed it, or indulge it, don't cling to it, and don't try to solidify it. Neither follow thoughts nor invite them; be like the ocean looking at its own waves, or the sky gazing down on the clouds that pass across it.

You will soon find that thoughts are like the wind; they come and go. The secret is not to "think" about the thoughts but to allow them to flow through your mind, while keeping your mind free of afterthoughts."

~ Sogyal Rinpoche
