Greetings!
We're starting the new year with a new series beginning this Friday, January 8: "Releasing Emotional Reactions," an audio retreat with Ken McLeod. Ken was certified to teach by HH Kalu Rinpoche, having completed two three-year retreats under his guidance. He brings a fresh point of view to working with immediate experience, integrating methods from all the major traditions of Buddhism. This series has deep personal meaning for me, as I was in the midst of listening to it when my nephew suddenly passed away 2 1/2 years ago. Ken's teachings not only helped me to respond with presence in the moment, but also to pass on simple methods my family could immediately use. I highly recommend this series for being equipped for the highs and lows of life. Ken is a mentor of mine and I can reach him for any questions that arise during this series. We'll have a roaring fire in the hearth and will be nice and toasty even if it's cold outside. In case of dangerous driving conditions such as a blizzard, we will be off and I'll post it on the blog. Those who attended Mike's recent OneDharma satsang (or "cutting through the crap" as he prefers to describe his sharing) were moved by his music, humor, clarity of being, and straightforward message of truth of who we are. Delivered in simple, straightforward language, with great humor and compassion, Mike shares the story of his own search for Truth and its ultimate collapse. I was happy to meet him and get a big hug afterwards, and invite him to come talk to our group as well.
Mike Snider hails from Gleason, Tennessee, and is a musician extraordinaire, a regular performer on the Grand Ole Opry. He has been asked by Adyashanti to share his knowledge and deep realization of the truth of awakening. Mike's message of nonduality is resonant with the nondual teachings of Buddhism and other religions; in fact, such experience transcends religious barriers altogether.
If you've ever wondered whether nondual realization is possible in this lifetime, or how it plays out in lived experience, his talk will provide inspiration and refreshment. Ample time will be given for questions and answers in a relaxed atmosphere.

I believe there is an important distinction to be made between religion and spirituality. Religion I take to be concerned with belief in the claims to salvation of one faith tradition or another--an aspect of which is acceptance of some form of meta-physical or philosophical reality, including perhaps an idea of heaven or hell. Connected with this are religious teachings or dogma, ritual, prayers and so on.
Spirituality I take to be concerned with those qualities of the human spirit--such as love and compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, a sense of responsibility, a sense of harmony, which bring happiness to both self and others.
