Greetings!

Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
It's taken sixteen weeks to go step by step through our series, Progressive Stages of Meditation on Emptiness, and this Friday is the Grand Finalé. We've learned about emptiness of self, emptiness of other, and increasingly subtle views of the nature of reality. So what's left? Buddha nature. This Friday we will focus on the basic luminous nature of all beings.

Next Friday October 9th is our special event with Dr. Mario Martinez (see below), then we'll be off the following Friday in honor of the PBC retreat. We'll begin a new study focusing on the Four Immeasurables Friday, October 23, with the 12-week series "Noble Heart" by Pema Chodron.

Introduction to Buddhism - Sunday, October 25th, 3-5 pm
In keeping with the educational mission of Luminous Mind, we'll have an Introduction to Buddhism in October. Invite anyone you know who would like to connect with the foundational teachings of this ancient path in a relaxed atmosphere.

Weekly classes and Introduction to Buddhism are held at my home in the Belmont/Hillsboro neighborhood, 1716A Linden Avenue, Nashville, TN 37212. 615-463-2374. Click here for map.

We want to cultivate the qualities of lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, but what do we do with negative emotions such as anger, jealousy, and aggression?

In this presentation Dr. Mario Martinez teaches how to apply Western mind-body science to the exalted emotions known in Buddhism as the Four Immeasurables, or Four Brahmaviharas. Based on how cognition and emotions affect the immune system, biocognitive techniques offer an added dimension to resolve the fear-based emotions that can block the health benefits of the Four Immeasurables and other contemplative techniques.

Although presented using research from the Buddhist community, this seminar is suitable for people of all spiritual paths who would like to keep negative emotions from undermining their positive intentions.

Dr. Martinez is a licensed clinical psychologist and the founder of biocognitive science. He is the author of the psychological novel "The Man from Autumn" (Llumina Press) and the CD learning series "The Mind-Body Code" (Sounds True). Because of his specialty in how cultural and spiritual beliefs affect the immune system, he has been a consultant for the BBC, National Geographic, the Catholic Church, and Buddhist monks. For more information on Mario's work visit
www.biocognitive.com. Presented in conjuction with the Institute of Biocognitive Psychology.

The event will be a fundraiser for Luminous Mind to allow us to bring in more teachers in the future. There is no minimum or maximum contribution. As a co-author of the event, please feel free to give whatever you feel appropriate and which makes you feel abundant.

To register, email info@luminousmind.net. To download a flyer and view a location map, go to http://www.luminousmind.net/events.html

Note: A Friday night study series on the Four Immeasurables will begin following this special event.

This Week's Quotes

A good motivation is what is needed: compassion without dogmatism, without complicated philosophy; just understanding that others are human brothers and sisters and respecting their human rights and dignities. That we humans can help each other is one of our unique human capacities.
