Greetings!

Question & Answer Time this Friday, July 17, 7 pm - It's the last teaching on the first stage of emptiness with the Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche. This will wrap up the no-self teaching from the DVD. Next week we'll review and finish all the supplementary material from the book, then on to the next step in the Progressive Meditations on Stages of Emptiness!

Make-up night on Monday 7 pm. Just email me if you want to come so I know what to expect.

Notes for last Friday are up on the blog, covering mental formations and consciousness, perhaps the most subtle skandhas to contemplate.

Since 2004, HERE II HERE (formerly "Inner Voice") has been moving and inspiring crowds with its rhythmic blend of smooth Pop, Rock, and Soul-drenched R&B music dripping with innovative lyrics of PEACE, AWARENESS, CONNECTON, LAUGHTER, and of course, LOVE. HERE II HERE makes modern mainstream sounds using their authentic blend of vocal harmonies, melodies, acoustic and electric guitars, and good vibes that lucidly float on top of an unusual percussive mix of ethnic and modern drums.

Because the path to enlightenment should be LIGHT!

Gong Concert - Richard Hite

Richard Hite Gongs

If you're not coming to Dharma study this Friday, here's another option.

Richard Hite will be back at Yoga Source at Cummins Station this Friday night, 7pm. For those who experienced him and his gongs in February, the feedback included feeling great for even several days afterwards.  You may recall he mentioned the best thing to lie on during the gongs is an air mattress -- for you frequency buffs, the gongs offer all frequencies so the air mattress enhances that.

But whatever you want to lie on, blankets, etc. bring them with you so you can relax to the utmost, along with a love donation (suggested is $20). Park opposite Cummins Station and bring in your ticket for validation. (Thank you, Susan Trent)

Quotes on the Skandhas
Dalai Lama
Consciousness

"The basis on which Buddhist[s] accept the concept of rebirth is principally the continuity of consciousness . . . If you trace our present mind or consciousness back, then you will find that you are tracing the origin of the continuity of mind into an infinite dimension; it is, as you will see, beginningless.

Therefore there must be successive rebirths that allow that continuum of mind to be there."

- THE DALAI LAMA

Meditating & Perception
There are several reasons for keeping your eyes open when you practice meditation. With your eyes open, you are less likely to fall asleep. Then, meditation is not a means of running away from the world, or of escaping from it into a trancelike experience of an altered state of consciousness. On the contrary, it is a direct way to help us truly understand ourselves and to relate to life and the world.

Therefore, in meditation you keep your eyes open, not closed. Instead of shutting out life, you remain open and at peace with everything. You leave all your senses-hearing, seeing, feeling-just open, naturally, as they are, without grasping after their perceptions.

Whatever you see, whatever you hear, leave it as it is, without grasping. Leave the hearing in the hearing, leave the seeing in the seeing, without letting your attachment enter into the perception.

- SOGYAL RINPOCHE

Perception as a habitual pattern

Everything that we see around us is seen as it is because we have repeatedly solidified our experience of inner and outer reality in the same way, lifetime after lifetime, and this has led to the mistaken assumption that what we see is objectively real. In fact, as we go further along the spiritual path, we learn how to work directly with our fixed perceptions. All our old concepts of the world or of matter or of even ourselves are purified and dissolved, and an entirely new, what you could call "heavenly" field of vision and perception opens up.

As William Blake said:

If the doors of perception were cleansed
Everything would appear . . . as it is, infinite.
