Greetings from Kali

I recently had the pleasure of attending and speaking at the 35th anniversary celebration at Duke University's OLLI. It was a great experience! Many OLLIs have lately celebrated milestone anniversaries, and these anniversaries are a reminder of how opportunities for formal lifelong learning have increased during the last five decades. Other reminders of how interest in lifelong learning is growing are the official proclamations of "Lifelong Learning Week" in several states. Please note this issue's feature on the most recent proclamation in Michigan.

Thank you to all OLLI staff, members, and volunteers for supporting lifelong learning!

Kali

Time to Register for the
2012 OLLI National Conference!!

The OLLI National Resource Center is pleased to announce that you can now register for the 2012 OLLI National Conference to be held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs,CO, on November 12-14, 2012. Please visit our website to review all the conference information and to register. The registration deadline is October 1st!

We will be strictly limiting participation to two attendees per Institute to make it possible for the delegates, National Resource Center staff, and the Osher Foundation staff and Board members to meet each other, network, and have substantive discussions and interactions. Each OLLI may decide upon the two delegates selected, but we encourage a mix of both staff and member leadership.

One of the greatest benefits of the OLLI National Conference is the exciting dynamic that happens when Osher Institutes gather together in one place at one time to celebrate cognitive vitality, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute movement, and its undeniable success.

If you have a story to share, please send it (with photos if possible) to Fran or Anne at the National Resource Center.

Take a Child Outside Week: September 24-September 30

"Take A Child Outside Week" is a program designed to help break down obstacles that keep children from discovering the natural world. By arming parents, teachers and other caregivers with resources on outdoor activities, the goal is to help children across the country develop a better understanding and appreciation of the environment in which they live as well as a burgeoning enthusiasm for exploring it. The program is an initiative of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and is held in cooperation with partner organizations across the U.S. and Canada. "Take A Child Outside Week" is sponsored locally by Dover Foundation, Inc. and Great Outdoor Provision Company.

Going outside connects children to the natural world; helps kids focus in school; and reduces chances of obesity. So take a child outside!

On this site you can: pledge to take a child outside and record your outdoor experiences, get ideas for outdoor activities, and find participating organizations in your area. For programs across the USA, visit this link.
