Greetings from Kali
|
It was my pleasure to attend the Southern Regional Conference for Learning in Retirement July 25-27 at the University of North Florida. The planning crew of Debra Herman, Florida State University; Ara Rogers, University of South Florida; Tom Santee, Eckerd College and Jeanette Toohey, University of North Florida, put together a great learning experience for all of us. With great aplomb and good humor, Jeanette acted as conference manager, overseeing the thousand details that crop up in an event like this. Staff and volunteers from the OLLI at University of North Florida seemed to be always available. The opening night featured local environmental writer and filmmaker, Bill Belleville with a captivating talk on "Defining and Celebrating Our Rare Sense of Place." Breakout sessions over the next two days covered everything from "Difficult Conversations" to implementing a MacIntosh computer curriculum -- and lots of other interesting slices of Institute life. One that I found particularly hopeful was a session on "A Path Toward a More Inclusive ILR," led by Charlie Delp, Pat Spencer, and Ara Rogers. We have talked about diversity or multiculturalism for years at almost every conference, but at last I think there is some progress afoot. For more information you can read this article from the most recent LLI Review: Delp, C. & Rogers, A., (2011).Inclusivity: Journey of Enrichment. The LLI Review, 6, 24-29.) A good time was had by all! The host institute torch has been passed to the OLLI at University of Georgia, Athens for the 2013 Southern Regional Conference for Learning in Retirement. We look forward to another thoughtful and productive conference in 2013! Kali

|
 | Attendees from the OLLI 2011 Conference sharing some thoughts about the presentation |
The OLLI National Resource Center is pleased to announce you can now register for the 2012 OLLI National Conference to be held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs,CO, on November 12-14, 2012. Please visit our website to review all the conference information and to register. The registration deadline is October 1st! The three-day invitational conference will be an invaluable opportunity for both staff and volunteer Osher Institute leaders from around the country to engage in lively discussions and share ideas on how to manage, develop, and expand their programs. We will share our best practices in resource development and fundraising, leadership, membership and volunteer management, public relations and publicity, curriculum, faculty and teaching and other topics. In addition, the planned program will feature reports on new and innovative trends, ideas, and programs related to education for older learners. We envision in-depth discussions of the leadership role that the Osher Institutes may play in the ongoing national dialogue about learning in later life.
One of the greatest benefits of the OLLI National Conference is the exciting dynamic that happens when Osher Institutes gather together in one place at one time to celebrate cognitive vitality, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute movement, and its undeniable success. OLLIs -- Toot Your Horns!
|
We have revamped the NRC newsletter to include articles from OLLIs around the network! We are looking for those special happenings or news items that you are particularly proud of and know others in the network will also be excited and inspired by when they hear about it. Please note -- We don't expect you to send something every month by any means, but keep the network newsletter in mind as a place to "Toot your Horn!" when good things happen.
We are happy to reprint one of your own newsletter stories -- we will just provide a bigger audience.
If you have a story to share, please send (with photos if possible) to Fran or Anne at the National Resource Center.
