Elderhostel Institute Network (EIN)

Many of you know of the existence of the Elderhostel Institute Network - EIN - (which is NOT Elderhostel the travel program!) Many of the OLLIs are members of EIN, which has a membership of some 400 lifelong learning institutes. EIN is another great resource for you, and membership is totally FREE. Click here to go to the EIN website, and click here to read a letter from Nancy Merz-Nordstrom, Director of EIN. NOTE:  Even if your OLLI belongs to EIN, please go to the interactive map and check the information posted about you there.  If it needs to be updated contact Nancy Merz-Norstrom.

Have you got a WOW of the month?

Wow burstHave you got a WOW of the month? Something your OLLI is proud of and would like to share with the rest of the OLLI network? The National Resource Center would love to hear from you! We are planning to post your WOWs in this newsletter.

Don't worry! We still plan to post Kali's monthly letter to the network plus her news items, as we know you enjoy these useful nuggets of information. We simply want to invite you to take the opportunity of sharing your special institute news items with the network.

Remember, we are looking for WOWS, those special BIG happenings or news items you are especially proud of and know others in the network will also be excited and inspired by when they hear your story.

We don't expect you to send something every month by any means; we are seeking those stories that are all the more special because of their unique WOW qualities.

If you have questions please contact Fran or Anne at the National Resource Center. We look forward to sharing your WOW news stories with the network!

Manage Your OLLI -- Document Archives
old computer archivesThe OLLI National Resource Center website has a reorganized section designed to make the location of useful documents easier to access.

- Publicity Materials

- Conference Workshops & Papers (To come soon!) For now, if you are looking for conference related workshops visit the NRC website location Conference News & Archives.

You will find wonderful ideas and lots of inspiration in the OLLI Document Archives! Let your committees and boards know about this resource and keep those materials and documents coming! (Please send them over to Anne.)

Worker Bees Available from the Civic Ventures Encore Fellows Program

The Encore Fellows Program launched by Civic Ventures might be a way for your OLLI to get some help with a project or an organizational conundrum. These paid, time-limited Fellowships match skilled, experienced professionals at the end of their midlife careers with social-purpose organizations (us). During the Fellowship period (typically six to 12 months, half to full time), the Fellows take on roles that bring significant, sustained impact to their host organizations. To find out more about the program and hosting a fellow click here.

illustration of man with megaphoneNebraska Governor Dave Heineman proclaimed January 23-28 "Lifelong Learning Week" in observance of the 20th anniversary of lifelong learning at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where OLLI has nearly 1,000 members.

The proclamation acknowledges the importance of lifelong learning, which "provides stimulating, congenial, and varied educational opportunities designed specifically for lifelong learners."

Photo of Earth from spaceIn case you missed the November newsletter, here is a repeat announcement of the new Northwest Earth Institute course syllabus, Hungry for Change, and a new note that two of their other syllabi are available at reduced prices: Global Warming: Changing Course , and Healthy Children, Heathy Planet. OLLIs have found these particularly good for study group materials.

NWEI is also sharing for FREE the National Wildlife Federation's campus sustainability case study database, highlighting projects of all sorts (classes, research, assessments, building design, action plans)  to improve the ecology of campuses across the U.S. The database is searchable by topic, year and school, and includes information on each campus's project goals, successes, challenges, funding strategies and project leaders. This might be a source of some new ideas/courses/lectures/activities/collaborations for you and your OLLI members.Just look for your campus, or your favorite topic, and be inspired!
