Dear MTCCC,
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has" ~Margaret Meade
The MTCCC has begun its implementation year 4! We have had major successes in the past year. As the MTCCC advances forward our foundation is strong and our membership is growing in numbers and diversity.
Our 4 Key Priorities this year are:
1. Organize the internal structure of the MTCCC
a. Increase the active membership and its composition
b. Create a Physician Advisory Group
c. Increase Organizations/Administrative commitment
2. Increase public awareness of the MTCCC
a. Increase internal communication
b. Brand the MTCCC as a statewide coalition
c. Increase Public Relations
3. Increase Colorectal Cancer screening efforts...on a united front
4. Track and gather all Montana cancer control activities
As you can see, we have a lot of work to do! Keep up the great efforts. Each MTCCC Committee and Team has exciting activities and events on their workplans to look forward to. This year is shaping up to be monumental!
We are a small group, but we are thoughtful, committed citizens and we are in an exciting environment to make a difference in the lives of Montanans.
Keep reading...Cheers!

FEATURED NEW MEMBER

Annie Elena: Cancer Survivor!
Annie Elena knows first-hand life doesn't always take the path we imagine for ourselves. At age 59, Annie was working as a dental hygienist and enjoying a busy lifestyle. She never anticipated she would soon be faced with surgery, recovery, hospital stays and ultimately the difficult decision to leave her job and face the prospect of a life with a permanent colostomy.
Annie had been experiencing some rectal bleeding and symptoms she attributed to hemorrhoids seen on an otherwise normal sigmoidoscopy exam just two years prior. When her physician investigated further, instead of hemorrhoid surgery, Annie was told she would need surgery and treatment for rectal cancer.
Despite the unexpected turns her life has taken, Annie has a postive attitude saying, "My life's philosophy is 'it's not what happens to you, it's what you do about it'. This is what makes me want to become more proactive especially now our healthcare is about to be restructured. I want to focus on screening especially for the low income, non-insured or underinsured individuals between the ages of 50 to 64".
Annie has recently joined the MTCC in order to do just that! We are excited to welcome her aboard as we continue to work toward reducing the burden of cancer in Montana. Welcome Annie!
Please log-on to the MTCCC website to read more of Annie's story. |
Grant Received!! CRC SCREENING...
The Montana Cancer Control Program Section has received a grant from the CDC for the outreach and screening of colorectal cancer!
This is great news for the citizens of Montana and we look forward to commencing screening and outreach in January, 2010. Our focus is going to be reaching all Montanan's 50 years and older with the important message of being screened for colorectal cancer and assisting those underinsured or uninsured with paying the actual screening.

MTCCC SPRING MEETING: Success!
Bette Bohlinger Leadership Award Announced:
Congratulations to Betsy Smith, who was the 2009 Bette Bohlinger Leadership Award recipient!

Betsy is a genetics counselor at the Benefis Health System Sletten Cancer Institute in Great Falls and the chair of the MTCCC Communication Committee. She has risen to many challenges over her many years of active participation in the MTCCC coalition. She is welcoming to new members, respectful of others, professional, and shows a true desire in helping reduce the impact cancer has on Montana citizens. She displays great leadership in every aspect and venture she pursues. Congratulations Betsy!
Super Colon Event:
Approximately 350 people were on hand at the Hilton Garden Inn in Great Falls on May 20th to explore the Prevent Cancer Super Colon.
Individuals learned about colon cancer risks and screening. The Super Colon display was one of the first public awareness events held by the MTCCC and the planning committee was pleased with the public response. Several local news stations were on hand and the Great Falls Tribune published both a preview and follow-up article highlighting Rita McDonald's personal battle with cancer. The Communication Committee would like to extend a special THANK YOU to Rita for sharing her story, and to the following members of the planning committee for their hard work leading up to this event: Cheryl Hackett, Ginny Furshong, Betsy Smith, Sue Warren, Deanna Hastings, Meg Ann Traci, Lisa O'Brien, and Tracy Boehm. |
MTCCC Assessment & Development Committee
Floris Dyke deserves a special Thank you and Kudos!
The MTCCC Assessment and Development Committee (ADcom) wish to recognize and applaud all Floris has done through the transition of our commitee from the Evaluation Committee to the new Assessment and Development Committee. Floris brings a world of expertise to the MTCCC, and we truly could not have survived without her! The ADcom has been successful because Floris has been central to our data analysis, interpretation, and inclusion of graphs and tables which have yielded much understanding to the membership. She is the former manager of the Evaluation Committee and continues to be a Taskforce leader on the ADcom.
Thank you Floris for all you have done to achieve success for our coalition. You are simply the best and we want to recognize all you do and continue to do for the MTCCC! Know your target audience. Who are your most important customers, clients or prospects, and why? Know what is important to them and address their needs in your newsletter each month. Include a photo to make your newsletter even more appealing. Inserting a link in your article lets you track which topics attract the most interest.

MTCCC Dashboard How do we know we are making progress?
Have you ever wondered how the MTCCC knows what progress is made from year to year? The Steering Committee had the same concern and asked that a report be formatted so, at a quick glance, they would know where progress was being made and where there might be a need to recruit more resources to achieve the goals of the MTCCC. Thus, the stage was set to develop a "dashboard". Just as the dashboard of your car gives you the information you need when you are driving, the MTCCC dashboard provides the steering committee with the information they need to see how far and how fast the goals of the MTCCC are being met. The data each committee and team already collects and submits is analyzed and put into a graph format so the results are set in a visual manner.
The dashboard for the 2009/2010 year is being updated to better represent the current 4 key strategic priorities of the MTCCC. The 4 key priorities are listed in the welcoming note at the beginning of this newsletter - take a second look at what we are striving for this year!!
If you have questions regarding the dashboard please contact your Implementation Team or Standing Committee Manager or a member of the Assessment and Development Committee.
If you are unsure of how to get in touch with your manager or a member of the ADcom please call Carrie Strike @ 406.444.6089. |
A Wonderful Partnership
Ridgeway Pharmacy and the MTCCC Early Detection Team helps make a difference!
The Early Detection Implementation Team (EDIT) would like to thank Ridgeway Pharmacy in Stevensville, MT for partnering with them to distribute early cancer detection guideline information. For the entire month of June, 2009 Ridgeway Pharmacy stuffed an average of 8,000 pharmacy bags with brochures detailing screening guidelines. The MTCCC is appreciative of Ridgeway Pharmacy's efforts and their committment to help reduce the burden of cancer in Montana!
The MTCCC would also like to extend a special THANK YOU to the following members who helped coordinate this effort: Tracy Boehm, Rita McDonald, Meg Traci, Diane Arave, Bob Harris and Joan Taylor. Each of them spent countless hours putting MTCCC contact label information on the brochures and helped with logistical planning. Thank you!
