Crabapples are one of our favorite spring blooming trees. They make an impact unlike any other ornamental tree!
Some people think of Crabapples and immediately think, "Yuck! Crabs are such messy, short-lived trees!" This statement is not completely untrue; many of the older varieties of Crabapples had problems with diseases and insects. However, many of the newer varieties are much improved...more disease resistant, improved fruiting, and more intense flowering. Which brings us to our plant spotlight this month: The Brandywine Crabapple.
Brandywine will grow to 15-20' tall and wide, and it performs best in full sun. The most spectacular feature of the Brandywine Crab is its flowers. Each spring, it is covered with fragrant, double pink flowers that give the branches the appearance of being draped in rosebuds. It flowers 7-10 days later than most Crabapples, so if we get a late frost (typical Iowa), Brandywine's flowers are more likely to be safe! Brandywine also features large green leaves that have a burgundy overcast, and large yellow fruit that is quite showy!
So if you're looking for a punch of color in your spring landscape, look no further than the Brandywine Crabapple!
