Board Members and EFAC Supporters Travel to Kenya
A team of 13 EFAC volunteers will be in Kenya next week for the annual "Mentor Workshop" meeting for the first time with all four grades of EFAC scholars. This four-day event helps all 180 scholars share common experiences and gain a better understanding of their options beyond school.
"We're delighted so many of our trustees and supporters are able to take part in this program," said Nancy Van Sciver, who will be leading the trip with her husband, Rod. "This will be the largest group we've ever had."
Everyone will have plenty to do while in the country for nearly two weeks. The Mentor Workshop, hosted by EFAC partner Africa Nazarene University (ANU) in Nairobi, will feature guest speakers and team building events so the scholars can get to know each other better. The scholars will also spend time with their college-age mentors who are students at ANU.
"The more connections we can provide these children, the greater their chance of success," Van Sciver said.
The EFAC volunteers have prepared mini-presentations on their own experiences and professional skills during the weekend, which they will share with scholars during the workshop. They will also visit most of the partner schools during their two-week visit in Kenya, giving them a better chance to get to know some of these extraordinary young men and women.
The group will be keeping a blog of all their experiences, and we urge you to follow along and learn more of what this organization has accomplished, the people behind it, and the many highlights of the trip. |

EFAC Student Spotlight: Collins Kibet
"The first term and my first introduction to high school life finally came to an end. I really enjoyed the days, interacting with different kinds of students from all over the country. I know this all happened due to your support to enable someone like me to have a seat at such a wonderful school." Letter from Collins to his sponsor
In his first year at St. Mary's Secondary School, EFAC Scholar, Collins Kibet, was selected to represent Kenya in the Eastern Africa Youth Athletics Championship held in Uganda in May where he won a gold medal in the high jump and the 27-member Kenyan team placed first in the competition. Bravo Collins and Kenya!
Collins was born in the Rift Valley Province in 1995. When Collins was in fifth grade, both of his parents died, so Collins had to drop out of school and move in with his grandparents. When they passed on shortly thereafter, Collins lived in the streets and moved from town to town looking for jobs such as pulling carts and packing and repacking luggage in vehicles. One of his customers realized Collins' potential and took him back to school and then secured him a spot at the St. Mary's Child Rescue Center. With support from the rescue center, Collins was able to finish primary school and did so well he was accepted into the St. Mary's Boys Secondary School where he is top of his class.

18 First Year Students Need Sponsors
In 2012, EFAC offered high school scholarships to 29 bright students, all of whom would be unable to attend high school without EFAC support. 75% of these students are orphans or from single parent homes and all of them finished in the top of their eighth grade classes.

EFAC student, Mercy |
Currently, 11 of these students have sponsors, but 18 students still need sponsors. In her application for a scholarship, Mercy, an unsponsored first-year student, wrote: "I promise to work hard to fulfill my dreams and to never let you down." In fact, in her first term of high school, she was in the top of her class in Chemisty, Physics, and Computer Studies.
Help us find sponsors for Mercy and her classmates by reading their biographies and sharing them with your friends. Students who need sponsors say "Needs Funds" on their photos.
You can also sign up for a sponsorship here and we will choose a student for you and send you a information on your sponsored student. Thanks. |

EFAC Summit For Education:
Mount Kilimanjaro October 2013
For many children around the world, the road to secondary education is as daunting and far-fetched as reaching the top of one of the world's Seven Summits. It is fitting then for EFAC to coordinate a fundraising effort that combines the challenge of raising money for secondary education, with the challenge of summitting one of the world's greatest peaks.
We are excited to be working with a respected local outfitter in Tanzania who has a long-standing, successful career in safely guiding climbers to the top of the majestic Kilimanjaro. By working with a local outfitter we will raise money to aid our students and efforts in Kenya while supporting the local economy in Tanzania.
Along with the challenge of climbing Kilimanjaro, EFAC will offer a pre climb visit to Kenya to meet the students your dollars will support. Following The Kilimanjaro climb we will offer safari options for anyone interested in extending their stay for a well-deserved vacation. A formal itinerary and fundraising packet will be available by December 2012.

Fifth Annual Golf & Tennis Classic A Success
In spite of a rain-out in June and some afternoon thunderstorms on July 24, the fifth annual EFAC Golf & Tennis Classic was our most successful to-date, raising over $45,000 to support our scholarship program in Kenya. Over 80 people came out to play and join us for dinner and a live auction at the York Golf and Tennis Club. Congratulations to Hutter Construction for first gross and Granite Investment for first net. Thank you all -- donors, sponsors, volunteers and participants -- for your generous support.
Photographs from David Speltz's Turkana Portfolio created a powerful display for dinner guests and were offered for sale with all proceeds benefiting EFAC. David has extended this generous offer to all EFAC supporters until 9/30/12. Matted prints: retail price is $500; special EFAC price is $400 with all proceeds benefiting EFAC. Hand-delivery or pick up in artists' studio in Portsmouth, NH. Please contact Sheila Kelly at info@educationforallchildren.org for more information. |

Recent Spread the Word Events
by Janet Crowder, Board member and EFAC Sponsor
Nancy, Rod and I traveled to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket in July for two fundraisers given by EFAC supporters, Dianne and Tom Durawa in Martha's Vineyard and Lynne and John Stahler in Nantucket.
The unique setting for the Edgartown party in the family boathouse (photo above) was exceeded only by the graciousness of the hosts and the passion and interest of the guests. After a lovely reception where we had the opportunity to meet the guests informally, Dianne and Tom introduced Rod and Nancy by first describing their own personal experience with their students and their trip with EFAC to Kenya in 2010. Then Rod and Nancy followed with a touching presentation coupled with our new video. The guests were engaged, asked a lot of questions, and have already committed to several scholarships.
The party in Nantucket was held in the historic Casino building in Sconset. Over 50 guests attended and cocktails and hors d'oeuvres were served on the deck where everyone was talking about EFAC long before the formal presentation began. Lynne opened with a powerful and moving introduction including the life changing experience their family of five had on the 2010 EFAC trip to Kenya. Rod and Nancy followed with their presentation and a long question and answer period. There was a lot of enthusiasm with many offers of support and scholarship sponsorship.
The trip was a great success. We met and made a lot of new friends and potential EFAC supporters outside of New Hampshire. Thanks so much to the Stahlers and Durawas for being such powerful ambassadors. |
