EFAC Launches Post High School Program

The first 45 EFAC students graduate in December 2012. They rank at the top of their classes. Sponsors, Teachers, Mentors and the EFAC Team applaud what four years ago seemed an almost impossible goal. The decision to continue education for these first graduates is an easy choice for us. Stopping this incredible momentum is not a choice.

Our plan is to offer every graduate a computer certification program during the 8-12 month period between high school and post high school education. And in turn every graduate will commit to a three month community service program.

After this interim period we anticipate that all the students will go on to a four year university program or a two year diploma program. Our intention is to assist with funding and mentoring for all of the graduating students.

35% of EFAC students are orphans and many who do have families have been forced to live on the streets and in rescue centers. These students come from some of the most difficult backgrounds in the world and yet they have prevailed and been awarded scholarships to the best performing high schools in the country. They have taken full advantage of these scholarships and now are ready to choose a career path and become a new generation of Kenyans.

Meet The Class of 2016

"As we entered the gate to the school, I could hear boys calling out for (Richard) Sironik. He is courageous and outgoing. From Brother Nderi's stories, he approaches teachers with confidence and he is a promising boy. Richard joined St. Mary's January this year after staying out of school for one year. His family was not able to take him to school after he graduated from primary school in 2010 due to lack of money. His hope has been restored and he is very confident about the future."  Mary Kiguru on a recent visit to St. Marys Boys School

EFAC Student, Class of 2016On a recent visit to St. Mary's School to visit the EFAC scholars, Mary Kiguru, EFAC Board Member, enjoyed meeting EFAC scholar Richard Sironik who finished top of his 8th grade class in 2010 but did not have the funds to go to high school. After spending a year at home, in a remote Masai village, he was thrilled to learn that he was selected to join the EFAC Class of 2016.

The 18 girls and 11 boys in the Class of 2016 started high school in January thanks to EFAC's support. With an average score on the national eighth grade exam (KCPE) of 378, this is our strongest class to-date.

Currently, all of these remarkable students need sponsors so they can complete their four years of high school.

Read their stories on our website and share them with your friends and family.

Meet Kenyan Board Member, Mary Kiguru

Mary Kiguru, EFAC Board MemberAs part of her job at Africa Nazarene University, Mary Kiguru helped establish the EFAC program in Kenya in 2008, overseeing the admissions process for the first class of 45 students and establishing relationships with partner schools. AS EFAC's first Countrywide Director, she established the EFAC Mentor Program and helped grow the program to 180 students. In January 2012, Mary became Director of Quality Assurance at Mt. Kenya University but remains intimately involved with EFAC and receives regular calls from students who need guidance. "Mary is EFAC's soul in Kenya," according to co-founder Nancy Van Sciver.

Listen to Mary describe EFAC's impact in Kenya.

EFAC DREAMS Chosen for NSDC Confernce

Education For All Children's EFAC DREAMS, a unique school based global citizenship program, was selected to present at the 2012 National Staff Development Conference (NSDC). The NSDC will host their annual summer conference in Denver July 22-25. It draws over twelve hundred teachers and administrators to further professional development and student achievement.

Presenters Ryanne VanSciver and Brenda Martin, EFAC DREAMS Development Coordinators, will focus on the national initiative of global citizenship and present a unique way to teach students of all grade levels about the responsibility of global citizenship with a dynamic integrated learning program where students interact with their African counterparts. Students learn about the similarities of effects of weather, economics, geography and other facets of life which create a sometimes vastly unbalanced but ultimately similar life between people from different countries.
