Third Annual Mentor Workshop
"I learned many things at the workshop like setting goals and self-awareness that will help me achieve my goals and make my dreams come true. I also learned that we should not give up in life no matter what the situation we are in and we must face our problems with an open mind." Rosalia B., Bahati Girls School, re: Mentor Workshop 2010
The 3rd annual Mentor Workshop will begin on September 2, 2011 at Alliance High School in Kikuyu, just north of Nairobi. One hundred fifty EFAC scholars will travel from all over the country for three days of leadership training, interactive lectures, and group activities. The first class of EFAC students is in their third year and will graduate from high school next year. To help them prepare for their future, the focus of this year's workshop is on "Choosing a Career," and there will be professionals from medicine, technology, business, community development and engineering who will attend the workshop to mentor with students.

Africa Nazarene University (ANU), EFAC Kenyan partner, chooses 50 mentors from ANU and the community to work with the students. ANU designs and implements the curriculum and runs the workshop. While all staff is volunteer EFAC pays $50 per student for travel, room and board. You can contribute to the Mentor Workshop Initiative and receive an original beaded bracelet for contributions of $100 +. |

EFAC Forms Strategic Partnerships
In the past 6 months, EFAC has formed 3 new strategic partnerships with local and Kenyan businesses. In April 2011, MBT launched a partnership with EFAC in a new MBT cause marketing campaign. Twenty percent of EFAC students are Masai, the inspiration behind the Masai Barefoot Technology shoe brand, so MBT joined forces with EFAC to benefit the future of these students. In addition to promotional sales events that benefit EFAC, MBT is currently sponsoring an EFAC student who is Maasai and has made a generous donation to the scholarship fund. Read more about this partnership in our blog.

Anthony Cheffings |
In Kenya, Anthony Cheffings, principle at OnSafari Kenya, recently began offering socially responsible safaris that allow safari participants to sponsor and visit EFAC students at our partner High Schools. In addition to helping spread the word on EFAC to Kenyan visitors, Anthony is sponsoring a first year student at Starehe Girls School and contributes a portion of all safari sales.
In Nashua, NH, Mesh Interactive Agency is currently supporting EFAC's social media campaign pro-bono through their summer intern, Ricky Hanson, a student at Temple University. You can see Ricky's work for EFAC on Facebook and Twitter.
Thanks to the support and enthusiasm of these businesses, we will be able to offer scholarships to more students. |

Samuel is fourth in his class at Rongai Boys School, and in May he was recognized as the most responsible and hardworking student at school. According to his teacher, he has also done "exemplary work in the school especially in the school community service program. He is also participating in the Kenya Students Science congress with an agricultural project. In two weeks time he will present the project at a national level, the highest in the country. It will be the first time a project from Rongai Boys is reaching national level since 2002. He is such a committed young man."
Congratulations to these two deserving scholars! |
