EFAC Launches Global Citizenship Program at Hulstrom Elementary School

In November 2010, 8 classrooms at Hulstrom Elementary participated in the EFAC DREAMS pilot program where they learned about life in Kenya and what it means to be responsible global citizens. The students corresponded directly with EFAC scholar, Mercy, and learned that high school is not free in Kenya. With support from their teachers and parents, the 3rd grade students organized 3 successful fundraisers, Cookbooks for Kenya, Coins for Kenya, and Company Fun, and raised over $3,000 to send Mercy to school. EFAC extends its heartfelt thanks and congratulations to the students and teachers of Hulstrom for their efforts in support of Mercy.

Hear directly from the students in the article and video below.

Hulstrom Students Make a Difference
written by Ginger, Liam, Gabby, and Marisa
EFAC has helped our community and us by raising money to help kids in Kenya. EFAC scholarship students in Kenya can go to school to get a better education. Hulstrom has helped the world by raising money for kids' educations in Kenya. Now, Mercy can become a great person and can change the world. She can get a great job like a doctor and find a cure for cancer. This will change the world. EFAC Dreams helped us feel good about helping others. We learned you can make a big difference even if you are one person on this earth.

Welcome to the Class of 2015

In February and March of this year, 50 Kenyan students started their first year of high school as EFAC scholarship students.  These 30 girls and 20 boys were selected from over 270 applicants based on their academic record, teacher recommendations and financial need. This group of students is our strongest class to-date with 90% of them scoring over 360 on their KCPE placing them in the top 15% of all students taking the exam. These students would have had to quit school after eighth grade without financial support and are now attending 7 of the top ranked boarding schools in Kenya.

Caroline at Alliance Girls School

Caroline M.

Caroline, one of the students from the Class of 2015, lives with her parents and 3 siblings in a remote area of Kenya. After earning the highest score on the 2010 KCPE among all the students in her district, Caroline was  offered a spot at her dream school, Alliance High School, one of the best national schools in Kenya. Unfortunately, Caroline's family could not afford secondary school fees but when her story was covered in the media, EFAC contacted her to offer a scholarship to attend Alliance. Caroline is currently our first EFAC scholars at Alliance high School.

Meet Caroline and our other new students and join the EFAC team in funding those students still needing a sponsor.

MBT Embraces EFAC as their Social Cause

Beading Cooperative in Kenya
Masai woman beading bracelet included with MBT purchase

MBT recently formed a partnership with Education For All Children to support high school scholarships for Kenyan students. Twenty percent of the children who benefit from EFAC are members of the Masai tribe - the inspiration for  MBT, Masai Barefoot Technology.

MBT and associated retailers including The Core in Palo Alto CA, Tip Top Shoes and Harry's Shoes in NYC, and Comfort One Shoes in the mid-Atlantic are promoting MBT and EFAC with in-store events during the spring and summer of 2011. At each of these events, a portion of proceeds from the sale of MBTs will go directly to Education for All Children and customers will receive a handmade beaded bracelet created by a Masai women's cooperative sponsored by EFAC. In addition More Magazine and O Magazine, where MBT advertises, will donate $10 for every pair of shoes sold at some of the events.

MBT-USA has committed a generous donation to EFAC to directly support secondary school scholarships for bright, deserving students in Kenya. Learn more about MBT and their partnership with EFAC

Thanks to MBT and associated retailers many more Kenyan students will have an opportunity to attend high school.
