EFAC Global Citizenship Curriculum Presented at NSDC Conference in July 2010

Education For All Children's EFAC DREAMS global citizenship program was selected from over six hundred applicants to present at the annual summer conference of the National Staff Development Council in Seattle, Washington. The conference was attended by over 1200 teachers and administrators from the United States and Canada, and EFAC DREAMS director Ryanne Courtney presented the interactive, global studies curriculum to a full house on July 21st.

The EFAC DREAMS curriculum is a standards-based social-studies program with an emphasis on technology, reading and writing. Interactive web pages are used to learn about places around the world and technology is used to facilitate communication between American students and EFAC students in Kenya.

The EFAC DREAMS pilot program was in 8 elementary classrooms last year and its beta program will expand to be in over 40 classrooms in the current academic year. If you'd like to use the curriculum in your school, check out the EFAC DREAMS Wiki and contact Education Development Coordinator Ryanne Courtney at info@educationforallchildren.org.

Mentor Workop Group Game

Second Annual Mentor Workshop

Nancy and Lisa Van Sciver joined 125 EFAC students and AN mentors at the second Annual EFAC Mentor Workshop hosted by EFAC partner African Nazarene University (ANU).  For many of these students, this was the first time they had met the other EFAC students and spent time at a university. Lectures, discussions, team-building activities, and games filled the weekend as the students learned more about leadership, giving back, and setting personal goals.

Last March, Rod gave disposable cameras to selected EFAC students and asked them to take photos of their homes and schools. The cameras were returned including notes about the content of each picture. Going through the albums is a great way to learn more about Kenya and get to know some of the EFAC scholars. All the albums are available on the EFAC SlideShare page and on the SlideShare tab of our Facebook page.

Happy Birthday Molly!

Facebook Causes LogoFor the second year , Molly Stahler is dedicating her birthday gifts to EFAC through Facebook Causes. Last year, she raised $2,100 to pay for 3 years of high school for EFAC student, Ivy. Molly is hoping to raise $1,000 this year to help Ivy through her fourth year of school. Help her reach her goal on Molly's Causes page or set up your own Birthday Wish and send another deserving EFAC student to high school.

"I just arrived home to my EFAC packet. After reading the letter from our student, Teya, I feel so much more connected.  I have goose bumps and tears and I feel really proud to be a part of this. Thank you for the opportunity. I am praying that Teya will be everything she wants to be and more!" Teya's sponsor

Our work in Kenya continues. Our goal is to sponsor an additional 60 students in January 2011. You can help us by signing up to sponsor a student or asking your friends to form a scholarship group with you.

EFAC Directors
Leah Marangu, Mary Kiguru, Nancy Van Sciver
In spring 2008 ANU Vice Chancellor and noted humanitarian Leah Marangu joined forces with EFAC president, Nancy Van Sciver to initiate a revolutionary secondary scholarship program. Thirty months later they have funded  160 students with full four year scholarships. This team led by country-wide director Mary Kiguru is making a significant difference.

Videographer Needed
EFAC is looking for a volunteer to help us edit our videos from Nancy's recent trip to Africa. This is a great project for a tech-savvy high school or college student who would like to volunteer a few hours a week for students in Kenya. Send an email to info@educationforallchildren.org if interested. Thanks!
