SAFETY NEWS
SAFETY IS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
Comprehensive Safety Analysis (CSA) 2010 Cost of CSA Development -A different look at a large impact Federal program One of the most interesting bits of information is just how little CSA has cost up until now. Over the last few years CSA has only used a maximum of five full-time employees and its budget has been well within the limits of the finances already assigned to FMCSA. Take a look at the budget for the last five fiscal years:
FY2011: $14.3 million FY2010: $9.5 million FY2009: $11.8 million FY2008: $6.6 million FY2007: $2.3 million.
That is remarkably little for a government program with the impact of CSA. It is not surprising then that FMCSA has asked for a big influx of cash and personnel for FY2012.
The Future Cost of CSA
The agency has requested $78 million and 98 new full-time positions in FY2012 to fully implement and integrate CSA. The figure represents $61 million for 696 full-time employees; $15 million for travel, equipment, training and expenses; and $2 million for CSA-related contracts. FMCSA's FY2012 budget request also includes a $261.8 million consolidated CSA grant program for state and local law enforcement agencies. The grants would help fund a variety of CSA-related activities and interventions, such as roadside inspections, compliance reviews and targeted enforcement.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Oral Cancer Facts
Close to 37,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year. It will cause over 8,000 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day. Of those 37,000 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in five years. This is a number which has not significantly improved in decades. The death rate for oral cancer is higher than that of cancers which we hear about routinely. Learn more here.
