 Volunteers Needed!

RIKC is looking for volunteers to assist the Director of New Business Development in selling donated hardbound books online as a component to a new book recycling initiative. Through this project, thousands of books are donated to RIKC for debinding and selling the recovered paper to recyclers. The revenue received for the recycled paper is utilized to support RIKC's sheltered workshops. In addition to recycling, hundreds of hardbound books are received, which we believe can be sold online to generate additional income.  The volunteer will be responsible for listing the books for sale online, tracking books sold, and then packing the sold books for shipping to the buyers.

 Skills needed:

- Computer skills to navigate online.

Skills not required, but helpful:

- Maintaining a simple database of books listed and sold.

Hours:

6 hours per week

Stay encouraged; it goes a long way

Dorothy Locks
Dorothy doing a quick pose in her new work uniform.

After three years of unemployment due to a physical disability, Dorothy Locks, an Employment Services Program participant at RIKC, is now a proud, full-time employee with Central Parking in Kansas City, MO. "I couldn't sleep. I was so excited to start working," explains Dorothy of how she felt when she landed the job last fall. Upon getting the good news, she came by to thank RIKC staff who helped her along the way. Tears of joy streamed from her face as Kelly Ohrenberg, Employment Services Branch Manager, expressed how happy and proud she is of her. Dorothy is so thankful of the guidance she received at RIKC: "Words cannot express my gratitude" she says.

When Dorothy first started with the Employment Services Program, her future was uncertain.  Falling behind on bills and in jeopardy of losing her house, she met with Don Dudley, Employment Development Specialist, who helped motivate her to reach her goals. Her first step was to obtain her GED. She reached that goal last June with some help and encouragement from her son, De'Shawn, who is currently in high school. Having her GED opened up a wider range of employment opportunities to Dorothy. She was able to work with Don and apply for jobs that would fit her goals. By November, Dorothy was employed with Central Parking.

Dorothy is thankful to now be able to provide for her family and take care of the necessities. With some help and leads from RIKC's Employment Services Program, her next big goal is to fix her car so she can further improve her transportation. Her word of advice to individuals facing a similar situation: "Stay encouraged and it will happen."

Congratulations Dorothy and best of luck moving forward in your new position!

Staff Spotlight

Kelly Ohrenberg

Kelly O. Meet Kelly Ohrenberg, Kansas City Employment Services Branch Manager. Kelly obtained her degree in Rehabilitation Psychology from University of Central Missouri and has been with RIKC since May 2011. She was drawn to working at RIKC because of our excellent reputation in the community. Despite the challenges that the program participants can face, such as a difficult job market and transportation issues, she enjoys working with her team and seeing individuals succeed. "The most rewarding part of working at RIKC is seeing someone become employed, support their family, and create a better life for themselves," says Kelly. When she is not advocating for the individuals we serve, Kelly spends time with her daughter, shopping, and enjoying the outdoors. Thank you for building brighter futures for children and adults with disabilities.

V-day AmeristarCares

  Did you know?

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan declared March as National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. He called for our nation to provide understanding, encouragement, and opportunities to help individuals with developmental disabilities lead productive, meaningful lives. At RIKC, we live this out every day through our mission to build brighter futures for children and adults with disabilities. Thank you for your support of individuals of all abilities.
