Community Awareness Reception

More than 75 people attended a reception held at The Rice Gallery on April 28 to learn more about The Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City. Two of The Institute's benefactors, Connie Fahey and Julie Clarkson, hosted the event for their friends to increase community awareness of an organization that they hold near to their heart. If you are interested in holding a similar event on behalf of The Institute, contact Tara Mulford at

YFI April Spring Cleaning Happy Hour

Another great event by our Young Friends of The Institute on April 16! The group held a donation drive and collected many camp supplies. Those who attended were also able to hear about Samantha's fun and educational experiences from attending camp last summer. She made great friends and great strides in the program. A little humor and a large goal; surgery doesn't stop this young girl from seeing the big picture

Felicia Ragland, 13, is your typical teenage girl.  She enjoys texting, fashion and painting her nails.  Yet, Felicia has a rare inherited disease called Marquio Syndrome - a disease with many symptoms; most notable is the abnormal development of the spine and other bones. After a two-month stay in the hospital due to a major surgery on her neck, she has something more than most - courage. Felicia remembers being very nervous the day of her surgery.  "It was my first major surgery in my life," she explained.

Felicia spends three days a week at The Rehabilitation Institute.  "When I come here, I feel good because I'm getting a lot of help and I never did before," says Felicia of her time spent in the Adolescent Day Treatment program.  With the assistance of her Physical Therapist, she is strengthening her legs and walking.  In Occupational Therapy sessions, she is strengthening her wrists.  As a short term goal, she laughed, "I want to be able to roll around on the floor."  Slowly, she is making gains to transition back to school at South Valley Middle School in Liberty, Missouri at the end of her 20 sessions with her Institute support team helping to keep her on-track.

We are all excited for Felicia's progress and cannot wait until she reaches her long-term goal of being a fashion designer.  We could all use a little fashion advice from a girl with guts.

New Series, Issue 1: Brain Injury

Thank You!

Thank you to the Cerner volunteers and United Seating and Mobility staff who lent a helping hand at the Wheelchair Round-up at The Rehabilitation Institute on April 19. Everyone did a fantastic job!  They provided such a unique service to people with disabilities who use wheelchairs. Many of the individuals served spend more time in their wheelchairs than most people do in their cars. Just having a clean chair to get around in gives them an extra boost in confidence.

Staff Spotlight

Kristi Bauer

Kristi BauerKristi is the Psychometric Assistant in the Neuropsychology and Family Services Department here at The Rehabilitation Institute. She has a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology and has been with The Institute for 13 years. In this role, Kristi performs neuropsychological assessments for pediatric and adult patients to identify their deficits following a brain injury or neurological illness. She finds working with individuals with disabilities to be inspiring. "I hope that if I have a tragedy in my life I can have as much grace as the patients I work with do," explains Kristi.

Outside of her everyday role at The Institute, Kristi has the opportunity to attend a variety Brain Injury Conferences and volunteers at our special events. In her free time, Kristi puts her 20 years of experience in the psychology field to use as a volunteer for hospice. Additionally, she has been honored as Employee of the Month three times throughout her years with us and in 2010 was presented with the Richard H. Kiene Excellence Scholarship Award which will allow her to attend the National Academy of Neuropsychology Conference in Marco Island, FL in November. Kristi has hopes of retiring here and to that she credits the people she works with. She says, "We make a great team and I love working with everyone. I feel appreciated everyday. My input and opinions are highly valued and that is very rewarding."

Thank you, Kristi, for your hard work and dedication to building brighter futures for children and adults with disabilities.
