Out of work, but not out of hope
Lawrence Mitchell fell nearly four years ago, leaving the entire right side of his body in pieces. He shattered his arm and leg and needed hip replacement surgery. Following his long recovery and unsuccessful job search on his own, Lawrence came to The Institute with little hope. Our Employment Placement Services trained Lawrence how to use the internet, fill out applications and compile a list jobs to pursue. Most importantly, our services improved his interview skills and gave him his confidence back.
Employer Development Specialist, Don Dudley, made sure that Lawrence was equipped with the right tools for his employment search. "The steps Don taught me to take when approaching the job search and interview are things I would have never done before. I didn't know how to send a follow-up e-mail after an interview," explains Lawrence. Don went "100% out of his way to help me" and "went above and beyond expectation." Don reached out to employers on behalf of Lawrence and took him to job interviews. He summed up how he feels about The Institute in one word...Phenomenal.
With the help of Employment Services, Lawrence was hired by Burtin and Associates where he does facility maintenance for the Derrick Thomas Academy. He started there part time, but was quickly promoted to full-time. He has now been employed there for over three months. Being able to work again allows Lawrence to stay focused and bring stability back to his life. He is thankful to be back on track again.
Congratulations Lawrence on your new job!

A little bit o' luck goes a long way

A group of Capitol Federal volunteers handed out some luck on St. Patrick's Day. Luck came in the shape of shamrock cookies for all of our program participants in the main workshops. They even got to decorate their cookies with green sprinkles. If that's not lucky, we don't know what is!
Thank you for braving the St. Patrick's Day parade crowds to spend the morning with us. Everyone enjoyed the celebration! |
Candidate of the Month
Brianna Edwards-Moreno

She works well with others, is punctual, and takes pride in her customer service skills. Her volunteer experience with Children's Mercy Hospital and the Salvation Army has helped her build on these skills. Brianna graduates from high school in May and is motivated and enthusiastic about starting her career. Brianna is outgoing and takes initiative, making her the perfect candidate for a variety of positions. If you or someone you know is interested in interviewing Brianna for a position, please contact Terri Henson at terri.henson@rehabkc.org.

Staff Spotlight
Marla Nelson
Let us introduce to you Marla Nelson. Since 2002 Marla has been working with R.I. Industries, our sheltered workshop program. As Lead Program Manager she works with our participants to set, maintain and review the goals they have set for themselves in the program. Marla currently works with over 180 program participants at our main and satellite workshops. She is also very involved with our ISO compliancy process. During the process, she reviews our workshop supervisors and program participants to ensure job duties are properly carried out.
Marla says that the most enjoyable part of the job is working with the participants. She has the opportunity to build relationships with them which allows her to better understand their wants and needs when they may not be able to accurately communicate them to others. One thing is for sure says Marla, "No day is ever the same."
Thank you, Marla, for your hard work and dedication to individuals with disabilities.
