Heart Healthy
Strokes are directly correlated to your heart health. More than 25% of patients served at The Rehabilitation Institute have suffered a stroke. Injuries from a stroke can affect the senses, fine motor skills, speech, the ability to process information, and even mobility. In honor of National American Heart Month, here are some tips for heart healthy living:
Know Your Blood Pressure - High blood pressure is the No. 1 cause of strokes; have it checked every two years
Know Your Cholesterol - High cholesterol increases the risk of clogged arteries, which can result in a stroke
Get Enough Sleep - 7-9 hours of sleep is recommended
Don't Smoke - Smoking doubles your risk for a stroke
Limit Alcohol Intake - Excess drinking raises your blood pressure, increasing your risk for a stroke.

From Helpless to Hopeful
One Individual's Journey to Employment
Our Employment Placement Program helps individuals accomplish many things. For Rochelle Mills, it gave her a leg up on life. Not long ago, Rochelle hit a rough patch. Not proud of the choices she had made, she was left with no home, no job and little communication with her children. She now has a renewed view on life.
Just three months ago, Rochelle's goal, first and foremost, was to gain employment. Don Dudley, Rochelle Woods, and Mike Cubon of our Employment Program worked closely with Rochelle to improve her resumé and computer skills, as well as ensure she had transportation to interviews. The Institute gave Rochelle the opportunity to sit down at a computer, apply for jobs online and receive assistance as needed. She said everyone was always so encouraging before she went to an interview. "They really gave me a boost in confidence," she explained. With the help and guidance of the Employment Services Program, she was hired at Arrow Fabric Care in Kansas City where she works as a front desk secretary. She works closely with customers and is always learning something new. Rochelle thinks her new position with Arrow Fabric Care is a good fit for her and is thrilled to be employed. "I like working, learning and having interaction with a variety of people there," says Rochelle. Her recent successes have opened the doors to communication with her children, saying "I am so thankful for the progress I have made and the help and hope that everyone at The Rehabilitation Institute has given me." Her Institute support team says that she is doing extremely well in her new position and her supervisor has nothing but great things to say about her. Congratulations Rochelle on all your accomplishments!
Our Employment Services Program helps individuals with disabilities identify their job skills, address barriers to employment, obtain job seeking skills and secure and maintain competitive employment. Individuals served include those with physical disabilities and/or mental disabilities. Click here to read more on our Employment Services. |

Staff Spotlight
Mary Henry

Meet Mary Henry. For nearly 20 years, Mary has worked at The Rehabilitation Institute providing excellent customer service to those we serve. Prior to taking a position here, Mary worked for the Missouri Division of Vocational Rehabilitation for 24 years where she had the opportunity to work closely with The Institute. In that position she developed a strong respect for the services we provide to individuals with disabilities. So it was a natural transition for Mary to take a position with our organization. Currently Mary is an Admissions Department Service Coordinator and works closely with the Employment Services Program, processing referrals and giving facility tours to prospective program participants and their families. In addition, she processes referrals for our Driving Program. Mary says that the most enjoyable part of working here is being the initial contact for program participants and their families. First impressions are very important and Mary does a wonderful job at ensuring that each individual has the proper information they need. She also appreciates having continued partnership with the Missouri Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
Mary is always offering a helping hand. She is an active member of The Institute's Personnel Committee and volunteers at many of our events, such as Ability Quest and Bacon Fest. She is also affiliated with The Missouri and Kansas City Chapters of the National Rehabilitation Association. While Mary is not serving individuals with disabilities, she enjoys spending time with her six year old granddaughter, Ashleigh, and traveling with her family. Because of individuals like Mary, The Institute is better able to build brighter futures for children and adults with disabilities. |
