Winter Safety Tips

Snow and ice are a part of winter, but falling down doesn't have to be! Here are a few tips to help you keep your balance outside when you are braving the cold weather.

1. Keep rock salt handy. Whenever the weather forecast predicts rain or snow get some salt on your sidewalks ASAP.
2. Make sure you wear boots or shoes with good traction.
3. Slow down! Allow extra time if it is slippery outside.
4. Ask for help. Do not be afraid to ask for a steady arm!

Determination Helps Young Girl
Overcome Her Obstacles

LaKeia

At the age of four, La'Keia Rambo's life drastically changed forever. It was La'Keia's teachers who noticed that something was not quite right with her right arm and leg; she was holding her arm funny and dragging her leg. Her mother took her to the doctor and after a thorough exam her doctor informed her that "your daughter has either had a stroke or is having one right now." La'Keia was rushed to the hospital where a cat scan soon revealed a tennis ball size tumor embedded in the left side of her brain. La'Keia immediately underwent surgery to remove the tumor. Once released from the hospital, La'Keia came to The Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City for intensive occupational and physical therapy three days per week for several months. When La'Keia began services she had a brace on her right leg and she had to relearn how to use her right arm. She had difficulty with buttons, tying her shoes and opening packages due to low coordination. As part of her therapy, La'Keia worked to improve her coordination, fine motor skills and mobility. La'Keia graduated from therapy and is back in school. She comes in about every six months following Botox injections. The injections help to relax La'Keia's muscles so that her therapists can stretch her muscles and further improve her mobility and function. Recently, La'keia switched from a metal arm brace to a padded arm brace giving her even more mobility. This is an intelligent, young girl who is determined to overcome her disability. Her therapists and family are thrilled with the progress she has made!

Remembering George Winger

G. WingerGeorge Winger, Board Member and Friend, passed away on December 25, 2010. We are honored to say that George served on the Board of Directors at The Rehabilitation Institute for over 30 years. He was a kind, intelligent gentleman that invested much into advocating for children and adults with disabilities. George used his skills as an attorney to write persuasive letters to policymakers concerning decisions affecting people with disabilities and the rehabilitation industry. He also used his gift to write eloquent proclamations honoring individuals for their service to The Institute. George was a dedicated volunteer and we are saddened by this loss. We want to thank his family for supporting him on his long endeavor with us and greatly appreciate all George did to help us build brighter futures for children and adults with disabilities.

Staff Spotlight

Lynne Mersch

For nearly 30 years Lynne Mersch has worked at The Rehabilitation Institute as a Physical Therapist in our Pediatric and Adolescent Program. Lynne attended the University of Kansas where she received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 1982. As a former Employee of the Month, Lynne is an asset here at The Institute. In addition to providing therapy to pediatric patients to facilitate functional movement, Lynne is trained in Bioness, a device used to send mild electric stimulation to the muscles to improve hand and foot function. Lynne's hard work and dedication has improved the lives of many children who struggle with minor to severe disabilities. Lynne's favorite part of working at The Institute is being able to work with children on a long-term basis. Working with patients up to five days a week for several weeks at a time allows her to perform intensive therapy and see her patient's progress.

When Lynne in not working at The Institute she spends her free time with her family and actively volunteering in the community and for her church. Thank you Lynne for all your hard work and the long hours you spend here at The Institute. If you would like to thank Lynne for the work she does please

e-mail her at lynne.mersch@rehabkc.org.
