Assurant Employee Benefits Host Mentor Day for Patients

Group Shot

As part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Assurant Employee Benefits hosted a mentoring day on October 27th for former patients of our adolescent program. It gave them a chance to learn about the insurance business and the various job opportunities available in that field. The five participating students spent their day meeting with experts in departments including marketing, IT, and claims. Brandon Fields, 19, was paired with Assurant Employee Dan Smith from the IT department. Brandon said that he "enjoyed learning what it takes to work in a big company like [Assurant]." One employee who mentored a student received services from us several years back. She enjoyed sharing her story with the students and explained that many companies, like Assurant Employee Benefits, are happy to accommodate a person with disabilities. Assurant purchased her a larger monitor for her desk so she can work more comfortably. Overall, the students were excited to see the inner working of the corporate  world and walked away with a better understanding of what the company does and what job opportunities are available to them.

The Rehabilitation Institute was happy to work with Assurant and hopes more events like this will take place in the future to raise the public's awareness of disabled workers in America. For more information about this mentoring day or to express interest in participating in similar events, please contact Tara Mulford at tara.mulford@rehabkc.org.

There's a New Tool in Town
 IM

The Institute has acquired an important piece of technology. It is called the Interactive Metronome (IM). IM allows patients to attempt to match rhythmic beats heard through headphones with repetitive hand and foot movements; it helps to retrain the brain by allowing them to stay focused longer on the actions they are doing. The Interactive Metronome provides structure for those who use it and provides auditory and visual feedback in the process. This therapy program benefits individuals that have a range of illnesses or injuries, such as traumatic brain injury or stroke. Thanks to the IM, there has been a positive impact on treatment giving here at The Institute.

According to Robin Miller-Goia, a Speech Pathologist at The Rehabilitation Institute, the IM has "helped improve [her] patient's attention, organization, and communication skills." Robin currently uses the IM with one patient, but hopes to soon use it with more. She spends on average three days a week working with the new technology and describes it as an attention training program with multiple benefits.

The addition of this new technology was made possible by a generous contribution from Kevin and Connie Fahey. The Rehabilitation Institute is committed to bringing the best technology to our patients and we appreciate our donors for making that commitment possible.

Softball Tragedy Leads to Happy Ending

 Erica Rockley

At Raytown High School Erica Rockley was the star catcher for the 2005 school softball team. She was catching in the second game of the season when a runner collided with her, leaving Erica with a severe spinal cord injury. With no feelings in her arms or legs Erica's family feared the worst. However, good news soon came when the X-ray showed no breaks, fractures, or structural damage to Erica's spine. The doctors at the hospital diagnosed her with a spinal cord contusion and concussion. After the swelling of her spine reduced, Erica spent the first few weeks of her recovery at The Rehabilitation Institute receiving intensive outpatient rehabilitation therapy. With the support of her friends and family, Erica has made a full recovery. She now attends Northwest Missouri State University with plans to graduate in May of 2011.
