A Little Miracle

After a 300-pound gate fell on her head doctors initially told her parents that Brooklyn, age 3, would not survive. Brooklyn sustained several breaks in her cheekbones, sinus cavity, around her eye and the back of her head. She lost sight in both eyes, had several seizures and was in a coma after the accident. In spite of being told that her quality of life would be poor if she survived, Brooklyn has made strides that no one could have imagined. Brooklyn's road to recovery has not been an easy one, but she is forever making progress.

After leaving Children's Mercy, she started treatment here at The Institute just after Thanksgiving in 2009. Brooklyn and her mom, Teresa, travel one hour each way up to five days a week for her therapy. Teresa says the drive does not bother her anymore. Brooklyn's mom is very comfortable at The Institute and she does not have to worry about her while she is getting therapy. Teresa knows she is in good hands. She even gets a little nervous when therapy gets cut back so Brooklyn can attend school. After the accident, Teresa stopped working in real estate and now devotes her all her time to her children and Brooklyn's recovery. Teresa feels in her heart that one day Brooklyn will be 100 percent again.

Today, Brooklyn is talking, laughing, and able to see out of her left eye. Like any other young girl, Brooklyn enjoys being a child and playing with her three older siblings. However, she still suffers from a brain bleed that affects her facial nerves; she cannot hear or feel anything on the right side of her face. If the bleeding stops in a timely manner, she should regain those lost senses before any permanent damage occurs. With the help of our therapists, Brooklyn is well on her way to great recovery and a fulfilling life.

A Thank You to The Institute Staff

To Kathy, Mike and April,
And all the other people who have helped me get stronger -

I want to tell you how much I appreciate all you have done for me! After having multiple brain surgeries and spending lots of time at the hospital, I needed a lot of care. You have been patient, kind and understanding. You have helped me to rebuild my strength, coordination and communication abilities. I hope to visit you again in the future and show you how I am doing. God Bless you all!

And Pam - Thanks for your care, your friendly cheer, the lunches and keeping us straight on the schedule!

You - all of you - have given us new hope for our son!
Blessings to all - Michelle and Dana Cunningham

Rehab Spotlight
Robin Miller-Gioia

RobinMeet Robin Miller-Gioia! Robin is a Kansas City native. She
considers her job as a Speech Pathologist at The
Rehabilitation Institute her "dream job." Robin graduated from
Rockhurst Universty with a graduate degree in
Communication Sciences and Disorders. Being her first job
after graduating, Robin has been working at The Institute for
nearly three year and has enjoyed every day of it! Robin's
favorite part of working here is "helping kids on an intensive
basis." She appreciates that opportunity to make a real
difference in a child's life by working with them nearly every
day. If you'd like to thank Robin for all her hard work with
pediatric and adult speech therapy, contact her at

Bacon Fest - The Sweet Smell of Success!

The Rehabilitation Institute is proud to announce that Bacon-Fest: The Other Fundraiser, which took place August 28th, was a huge success! Thanks to over 80 volunteers, 17 venders, numerous community sponsors and a devoted fundraising team Bacon Fest raised over $35,000! In its second year, event attendance grew from 300 in 2009 to 1,000 in 2010. Between the live bands, endless bacon dishes, and bacon themed contests there was never a dull moment!

Greeters
The first contest was the recipe contest which was judged by three locally renowned chefs. There were eight contestants and each recipe was equally creative and delicious! Taking first place was Jameson Watkins with his bacon wrapped dogs with garlic aoli. Next up was the bacon eating contest, which was a fan favorite. Robert Oren took home the trophy by eating over 1/2 a pound of bacon. The last contest was between the "Pork Partners." The 17 amazing vendors prepared bacon in ways we never thought possible. The winner of the contest was KC Hopps Ltd with their delicious "pork belly".

Adding to the excitement of the day were two of KC's favorite hometown bands: Baconater and H-Gage. And let's not forget The Institute's own with the mic, Board Member Larry Hightower, kept the crowd enthused throughout the event.
     Eating Contest
A huge thank you to all the Bacon-Fest sponsors, volunteers, and those who attended the event. All your efforts contributed to a great cause by helping The Institute build brighter futures for children and adults with disabilities. With the event being such a great success you can anticipate a third annual Bacon-Fest to take place next year. So don't throw away your rubber pig noses just yet because we're hoping to make next year's event an even bigger success. Save the date, August 27th, 2011!
