| A Cool Treat on a Hot Day | |
Clients make their way through the sundae line picking their favorite toppings. |
For the past three years SKC, a communications company based out of metro Kansas City, has been providing ice cream socials to workshop participants at The Institute. On July 23, a group from SKC once again provided a wonderful ice cream social for participants to enjoy. They set up an assembly line with a variety of toppings, including sprinkles, chocolate sauce, whipped cream and cherries. Smiles and thanks resonated throughout the room as participants made their way through the sundae line adding their favorite toppings. What a great way to cool off on a hot summer day. Thank you SKC for another delicious ice cream social!

| RiteMade for a Right Start | | |
An Institute client
employeed at RiteMade. | For almost 20 years, RiteMade has provided short-term work experience for thousands of clients with The Rehabilitation Institute who have the desire to become competitively employed. Headquartered in Kansas City, RiteMade manufactures roll paper products for businesses ranging from Taco Bell and Pizza Hut to Hallmark Cards and Payless Shoe Source. They provide internships and temporary employment for our clients served at The Institute. RiteMade is there for Institute clients who want to enter the workforce for the first time and for those who are returning to work after a disabling injury or illness. When asked why they provide these opportunities Todd Whitaker, RiteMade's Director of Manufacturing, says "It's good for the company." He says they have a need for employees and they believe it is important to give back to the community. Whitaker credits Institute employment training specialist, Linda Wood, for much of the program's success. "There's no extra challenge for us in having these workers," he said, "thanks to Linda's care and supervision."

Mike Cubon | Mike Cubon
Mike Cubon, Employment Service Specialist, has been with The Rehabilitation Institute for 14 years. In this capacity, he assists disabled individuals in creating a vocational plan that will help them secure and maintain competitive employment. He assesses client's interests, relevant skills, and potential barriers to employment when needed and then helps the individual create a starting point and goal to work towards. Once the individual chooses to receive employment services from The Institute Mike plays a key role in providing support as the client moves forward with the job placement process. "I enjoy the work I do because of the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of others" says Mike. He enjoys getting out in the community, meeting new people and building relationships and resources that will further assist clients on the road employment.

Candidate of the Month | | Evans Waters
Meet our August Candidate of the Month, Evan Waters. Evan has a Masters' Degree in Library Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia and is looking for a position at a library in the downtown or plaza area of Kansas City. He currently volunteers at the Kansas City Library, Central Branch, where he enjoys working with the inter-library loan service. He also has a knack for catalogue systems. Evan's valuable expertise in problem solving, information management and clerical skills would only make him an asset to any area library. In addition, he is proficient in Spanish at the college level. Evan says he is drawn to working in libraries because he "enjoys it as a work environment." It seems like a natural fit for him; he enjoys writing and books. His vast knowledge of library science allows him to help those that can be overwhelmed with what the library has to offer. If you are interested in learning more about Evan Waters, contact Don Dudley at
(816) 751-7762 or dfdudley@rehabkc.org.
