April is Volunteer Appreciation Month

This newsletter is dedicated to the many volunteers who generously give of their time and talents to help
bring The Rehabilitation Institute's mission to life.

Behind the scenes with
The Rehabilitation Institute Volunteers

With amazing staff and outstanding services, The Rehabilitation Institute stands above the rest, but not without help from a few volunteers who share their time and talents weekly.  Thank you for your services!

Chet KochCarl Jelley, a retired Orthopedic Surgeon and licensed massage therapist, began volunteering at the Institute because he wanted to give back to the community. He started by providing therapeutic massages to individuals with Multiple Sclerosis. He now spends two days a week providing massages to pediatric and adult patients with many different disabilities including spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and stroke. His massages help patients relax and get the most from their rehabilitation therapy sessions.

Chet Koch William " Bill" Schlosberg has volunteered at the Institute for three years.  He puts his analytical and math skills to use creating and maintaining data tracking systems. Bill, who is a stroke survivor and past patient, was looking for a way to give back and his skills were a good match for the Institute. The databases he created are helping the Institute track admission trends and schedule staff.   Bill and his wife, Marge, also participate in the Institute's annual special events.

Bryce Visser, of Visser Assistive Technology Engineering and Computers, began volunteering with the Rehabilitation Institute in 2002.  He lends his time and talents helping clients served by the Adaptive Computer and Communication Technology (ACCT) Program. Bryce provides technical assistance to clients, and helping them get the most out of their adaptive technology.

Jeff Siler, of ConnieCare, Inc., began volunteering in 2009.  He assembles client charts for  Employment Services and ACCT.   Jeff's experience with case management and his attention to detail are a perfect fit for chart assembly.  With Jeff's help, our staff  are able to spend more time providing direct client cervices.  A brain injury survivor himself, Jeff participated in the Institute's first annual Ability Quest.

Lola Vanschoelandt began volunteering two years ago. Lola knows the Institute well.  She is a past patient and worked in the Employment Services Department for 29 years.  As a volunteer, Lola provides clerical support and helps with outcome data collection.  She was also one of the top fundraisers for the first annual Ability Quest.

Lori Spies is a professional organizer and began putting her expertise to work at the Institute in 2009.  As a volunteer, she developed a system for storing and accessing testing materials used in the Pediatric and Adolescent Program.  Lori's superior organizational skills allow our staff to spend more time with their patients.

Volunteers Bring Events to Life

In addition to weekly volunteers, individuals and groups help the Institute plan and implement special events, educational seminars and patient/client activities.

A volunteer committee comprised of Institute Board Members, business and civic leaders, and friends of the Institute are helping the organization complete its first major fundraising effort in forty years.
The $7,000,000 effort will enable the Institute to:
  • Renovate the facility to create efficiencies in the delivery of services.
  • Create dedicated centers of excellence in the areas of brain injury, spinal cord injury, and stroke care.
  • Add a therapy pool.
  • Improve employment opportunities for the severely disabled.
  • Improve access to parking.
To date nearly $1,000,000 has already been pledged to the effort!  To find out more about the effort and how you can help, please call Dana Chatlin, Director of External Affairs, at 816-751-7815 or  click here to email Dana.
