Teaching adaptive snow skiing:
Day at the Creek
In January a group of past patients participated in the first annual Day at the Creek held at Snow Creek in Weston, MO where they experienced adaptive snow skiing. The Rehabilitation Institute sponsored the individuals with spinal cord injuries and spina bifida including their equipment and ski lift fees, while the National Sports Center for the Disabled and the Snow Creek Instructors conducted the training for the individuals and their families.
The individuals, whose ages range from 20 - 70, learned to snow ski. "We want them to be trained so they can go by themselves later," said Corey Wright, Recreational Therapist for The Rehabilitation Institute and coordinator of the event. "Every person had a family member who got to see how they were being trained so they can help later too." Thanks to this event, Flatlanders Ski & Snowboard shop in KS has sponsored a patient who will receive three sessions of training on adaptive skiing.

The Rehabilitation Institute continues its' high quality with CARF accreditation!
CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, announced that The Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City has been accredited for a period of three years for 12 of its medical rehabilitation and employment placement programs. The Rehabilitation Institute was the first organization in Missouri to receive CARF accreditation in 1971 and it has continually achieved accreditation since that time. An organization receiving a Three-Year Accreditation has put itself through a rigorous peer review process and has demonstrated to a team of surveyors during an on-site visit that its programs and services are of the highest quality, measurable, and accountable. "We know we do an excellent job at The Rehabilitation Institute," said Peri John, Manager of Professional Standards for The Rehabilitation Institute. "CARF Accreditation tells those we serve and the community that an independent group of reviewers has verified that our services are high quality and produce positive outcomes." For more information on the programs accredited, please visit www.rehabkc.org or call us at 816-751-7700.

COREY WRIGHT
The Rehabilitation Institute

Corey Wright, Recreational Therapist, stood in front of nearly 160 employees of The Rehabilitation Institute and their guests at the 2009 Service Awards Banquet and was named the 2009 Employee of the Year. "It is flattering," said Corey, when asked about being awarded Employee of the Year, of course with a big smile on his face. As a Recreational Therapist, Corey helps individuals with disabilities build their confidence daily. He helps individuals learn to drive again in the Driving Program, coordinates the Sails Program and assists individuals in getting adaptive equipment, assists in the EXCEL Program and is involved with MSAC.
Corey is the coordinator for A Day at the Lake and Day at the Creek, both adaptive skiing events by The Rehabilitation Institute. He also is on the planning committee for the Ability Day, which gives people with disabilities a day to experience adaptive sports and activities. Congratulations Corey on being awarded this special honor! |
A proud moment for R.I. Industries: ISO Compliance Achieved!
R.I. Industries, the work adjustment program at The Rehabilitation Institute, provides a cost-effective option for light industrial sub-contract work ranging from soldering and assembly to packaging, labeling and sorting. Recently R.I. Industries has achieved ISO compliance, which helps potential business clients have confidence in the products and services provided. In order for a business to be ISO compliant, they must conduct a high standard of quality in everything they do and produce. "We were audited on our work and products," said Lynda Pellerito, R.I. Industries Facility Manager. "They looked at our document control, audits, control of non-conforming products, corrective actions, preventative actions and our continual improvements." After three years of hard work to becoming ISO compliant, R.I. Industries is ready and dedicated to provide high quality products and services. R.I. Industries is supported by EITAS, Empowering Individuals through Advocacy and Support, Developmentally Disabled Services of Jackson County. |
