Tip of the Month

Watch your step!

In this cold season remember to watch your step. Falling on ice is not only embarrassing, it can cause serious injury such as a traumatic brain injury and broken bones. Sometimes ice can be where you don't expect it.

Stroke Survivor Soars:
From High School Student to Professional

Brian Wingett

As a Sophomore in high school Brian Winget was learning to drive, dating and receiving all A's in school. One day he came down with a sore throat and a fever. After getting antibiotics, Brian became worse and had an undetected stroke. Brian was paralyzed on his right side and couldn't speak. He stayed in the hospital for one month and began his therapy. He continued his therapy at The Rehabilitation Institute in the Pediatric and Adolescent Program. Upon arrival he needed much assistance with everyday life, but thanks to his therapists and his positive attitude, he learned to walk, talk and use his left hand to do everything.

While in therapy Brian attended the school transition program at The Institute, which helps children and teenagers stay on course with their school work while receiving therapy. After therapy, Brian kept in touch with many of his therapists.

After graduating from Rockhurst High School he made his way to Creighton University where he studied and gained his Bachelor's degree. From there, he graduated in 2008 from the University of Missouri with a Law degree. He recently passed his bar exam and began seeking a job. Brian gained assistance through the Employment Services at The Rehabilitation Institute and learned valuable skills in networking and landing a job. As a college student, Brian worked at Wirken Law Group, P.C. as a law clerk. He is currently working as an Attorney for the Wirken Law Group, P.C. With a positive attitude and strong motivation along side the support from The Rehabilitation Institute he has succeeded in his career and in his daily life.

People are getting jobs

with the help of Employment Services

Ron

Ron Martin, 58, was featured as a Candidate of the Month in our August 2009 newsletter. With the help of our Employment Services, Ron found a job and is happily working. He works in a janitorial position at a federal building cleaning the rooms and taking out the trash. Ron is just one of many clients who are finding jobs with the help of our Employment Services staff. In 2009 despite the economic challenges, all four of the Employment Services branches have placed 152 people in employment.
