A Day to be Thankful,

Thanks to SKC Communications!
SKC Communications volunteers
With turkey, stuffing and all of the traditional food of a Thanksgiving dinner, a group of volunteers from SKC Communications prepared, cooked and served a Thanksgiving dinner for the 80 clients at the 12th and Troost RI Industries Sheltered Workshop. "We raise money throughout the year and then work together to cook the meal," said Emmett Paydon of SKC Communications. This is the third year the volunteers have brought a dinner. "It's a tradition for us," said Emmett. Thank you SKC Communications for your generosity toward RI Industries clients and the hard work you put into this meal for them!

Congratulations to Connie Fahey as the successful bidder of the bird house! Thank you to everyone who bid to benefit The Institute!

"Thanks for giving my life back to me"

Brad McLeodOn the day Brad McLeod, 57, was leaving therapy at The Rehabilitation Institute, he brought a cake to the therapists that read "Thanks for giving my life back to me."

Brad will be the first to tell you there is life after a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Falling hard off of a trailer, Brad, hit his head on the steel foundation of the truck causing brain and spinal injury. "My upper hard drive in my head was erased," said Brad. "My ability to divide and multiply was gone." He also had problems with his balance. He made his way to The Rehabilitation Institute where he found lost abilities and took the steps toward living his life again. "Renee Hughes (Physical Therapist) had me doing exercise and walking up and down stairs and around the building," said Brad. "I can walk up and down my concrete steps at home on my own now. I am proud of myself for conquering this." Brad now has his balance and can walk in a straight line. "I am intensely loyal to The Rehabilitation Institute," said Brad. "They changed my thinking."
BlakeBlake's story:
A brain tumor leads him to
The Rehabilitation Institute

At Blake's second birthday party, his mother, Mandy, noticed he wasn't using his right hand. It wasn't until the family took Blake to the doctor did they really know the reason he wasn't using his hand. Blake had a large tumor on the left side of his brain. This benign tumor was pushing on his brain affecting his motor skills and speech. "The tumor was so deep the doctors had to be careful when removing it," said Mandy Danforth. "After surgery, his whole right side didn't work."

Since his arrival at The Rehabilitation Institute in June 2009, Blake has learned to strengthen his muscles and walk better. He also can pick up light weight items with his right hand. Blake is still in therapy three days a week with the therapists at The Rehabilitation Institute, but has come a long way since his surgery. "He has improved," said Mandy. "It's been amazing."

Thank you Assurant Employee Benefits for singing Christmas Carols to our clients and patients! Everyone enjoyed the beautiful music!

REHAB SPOTLIGHT

BRENDAN SMITH, Occupational Therapist

Brendan SmithBrendan Smith, Occupational Therapist, has been with The Rehabilitation Institute for 31 years of her 42-year career. Currently Brendan works with patients as an Occupational Therapist, giving them the skills they need to be independent. She works with patients in their meal preparation, eating, dressing and bathing. Some may have lost the use of an arm and need to relearn the lost abilities which were once second nature. While others may need to adapt the way they live their daily lives. In Brendan's many dedicated years at The Institute, she has also worked as an Assistant Director of Occupational Therapy and Director of Occupational Therapy. Brendan received her Bachelors in Occupational Therapy from St. Catherine's University in St. Paul, MN. This month our staff and patients at The Rehabilitation Institute will say farewell to Brendan as she retires. We wish her the best of luck and thank her for the many years of great service! You will be missed.
