Relearning to walk with LiteGait
Walking is something most of us do without thinking. After a stroke, spinal cord injury, or other neurologic injuries, the ability to walk is often impaired. Body-Weight-Supported treadmill training using our LiteGait system can help those individuals relearn to walk. Pictured left is Paul Hansen, PT, PhD, and Ali, a current patient, working on the LiteGait. Supported in a harness over a treadmill, patients do not have the fear of falling and are free to attempt walking. "Removing the fear of falling, walking at speed, and taking lots of steps, all while walking with normal movements are critical factors for restoring walking," said Paul. "I have seen a lot of success when using body-weight-supported treadmill training." Thanks to a donation from the Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church in Overland Park, KS we recently acquired a pediatric LiteGait designed specifically for children with mobility challenges. |

Did you know?
About 25 percent of the people who have strokes each year are younger than 65. |
Helping one person at a time
We received this wonderful letter from a mother of a past patient. Congratulations to Rebekah on her graduation!
In 2003, Rebekah was 12 years old and came to you after an extended illness of encephalitis caused from influenza A and B - she has come a long way from really growing up all over again. Thank you very very much from the depths of my heart for helping her with this task. She now is graduating high school and going on to college in the fall. There are no words to express how grateful we are for all you have done for her. Thank you! Sincerely, Donna

Thank you Presidents and Past Presidents General Assembly!
The Presidents and Past Presidents General Assembly, a women's service organization, has generously supported The Rehabilitation Institute since our founding in 1947. After 92 years of service to the community, they are disbanding. With a final hoorah, they held a High Tea and donated to The Institute for the last time. We want to thank them for their wonderful donations!
