Season's Greetings from the AWS!

December 2011

Dear Friends,

Santa & dog open houseAs we close on 2011, we look back on our 45th year.

We could grab at your heartstrings with tales of "kittens found in dumpsters" or the "abused, emaciated dog" which are the sad and unfortunate realities of sheltering that we see every day. Instead, we want to focus on what your help and support has accomplished this year.

In April, we opened an in-house, low-income spay and neuter clinic! By year's end, the Clinic will have performed more than 1,000 surgeries on our community's cats!

More than 4,000 area students have taken part in an AWS educational program this year. Our humane education department teaches our community's youth about the importance of responsibility and respect toward all animals.

Our Pets and Women to Safety program has sheltered 12 pets from eight homes this year. This program, in conjunction with Caring Unlimited, provides foster homes for the pets of women escaping domestic violence situations.

This year, more than 600 employee hours have been devoted (so far!) to disaster relief and response. Our professional staff was requested at disaster events in Joplin, Mo., northern Vermont, and set up and staffed shelters in York County for Hurricane Irene.

Finally, we are on track to find more homes than every before for our residents! Through the end of November, 1,627 cats, 683 dogs and 204 small animals have been adopted. An additional 281 animals have been reunited with their grateful families.

For those that currently support our animals, we thank you for helping us to accomplish so much. For those that will become supporters this holiday season, we welcome you into a group of caring people who do so much good.

Thank you AWS,

My husband Kevin and I were vacationing in Maine last summer, heard about your shelter, and stopped by on July 29 on our way home to Brooklyn.  We wandered around the dog pens a little on our own and then headed back to the reception area.  An employee named Melanie took one look at us and introduced us to Lydia, a small black lab mix.  "She's a nice, calm dog," Melanie said.  We wanted a nice calm dog.

Lydia, Success StoryMelanie gave us a leash and suggested we take Lydia for a walk.  Lydia wouldn't look at us, and when we attempted to stroll around the grounds she refused to budge.  We wavered.  But we left West Kennebunk that day with a red collar, a red leash, and Lydia.  "You're going to be happy with Lydia," Lori said when she finished up the paperwork.

We just want to report that we're really happy with Lydia.  She has a great, soft coat.  She wags her entire body.   And she has a special skill-a 360 degree spin-that brings joy to everyone around her.  Sometimes she spins when she's wrestling with other dogs, but other times she just leaps in the air and spins out of pure esctasy.

She has a pretty good life in Brooklyn.  Twice a day she goes to a nearby park and runs around off leash with other dogs.  Her best friends are Leo and Ernie (golden doodles), Pumpernickel (a beagle), and Rudy (a cocker spaniel), but she's friendly to most dogs and to all people.   "She's so calm," everyone says.

Kevin likes to play chase and hide and seek with her, and Lydia bends down and leaps up and runs around like a maniac.  I played like that with her one day, and a passing stranger looked at Lydia and said, "That is one happy dog."

Thank you for making the match.
