Thankful!
It has been another incredible year at the Animal Welfare Society!
Our staff has cared for and and found new homes for more pets than ever before, our programming has expanded and, as always, our volunteers have been instrumental in the great work that we do each day!
This year, the number of animals that we have helped from the 21 towns we serve has already surpassed 3,000!
Since April, AWS has provided the funds for 144 cats from low-income families to be spayed or neutered at the Shelter Clinic. In all, nearly 800 community owned cats have been "fixed" since April!
Since the school year began, our Humane Educator has spoken to dozens of classrooms and hundreds of students about the importance of animal care, responsibility and empathy.
Our donors, big and small, have allowed us to ensure food is in bowls, medicine is in stock and the heat is humming! Every donation makes a difference to our animals.
And, so far this year, our fabulous volunteers have logged more than 12,000 hours helping us to care for and provide enrichment for the thousands of pets that rely on AWS when no one else is there for them.
The AWS can not possibly attain the goals of our Mission without the support of our community and from YOU! Thank You!

Shelter Spay/Neuter Clinic offers clinic to Sanford Residents
On Saturday, October 19th the Shelter Clinic and AWS teamed up with the Sanford Springvale Animal Welfare Team to provide $25.00 spays and neuters for 28 cats of low-income residents. Pick up was at the Sanford Police Station and the Nasson Community Center in Springvale. The cats were taken to the Shelter Spay/Neuter Clinic, located at the Animal Welfare Society, where they were spayed or neutered and returned to their grateful owners later in the day. The Shelter Clinic and the AWS plan on conducting additional clinics with Sanford other area towns. The services provided during the Clinic's regular hours and during these outreach clinics should reduce the number of unwanted cats in the area in the coming years. For more information or to book an appointment at the Shelter Clinic please call 207-985-3244. DID YOU KNOW? An unspayed female, her mate and their offspring, producing 2 litters per year, with 2.8 surviving kittens per litter will grow to family of 12 cats in the first year, 67 in the second and 367 in the third, and the number gets exponentially larger. Please, get your cat "fixed" and urge your friends and neighbors to do the same!

In 2011, AWS Satellite Adoption Centers have found 176 homes for AWS cats!
We understand that some people have a hard time visiting an animal shelter. Some people don't know about adoption or about animal shelters at all. That is where our Satellite Adoption Centers come in! By placing pets in retail spaces, our cats get exposure to people that they wouldn't have at the AWS. We partner with 8 locations in Southern Maine who provide care for adoptable cats until they find a home. Once a person or family finds the pet for them the adoption process is similar to any other adoption. Potential adopters come to the shelter to go over the adoption contract and paperwork with a trained Adoption Counselor. Visit one of our Satellite Locations today! Ann-imals, York Pet Quarters, Wells Nature's Gifts, Kennebunk Andy's Agway, Dayton PetSmart, Biddeford PetCo, South Portland Pet Quarters, Scarborough Paws Applause, Scarborough At this time of year when we reflect on what we are grateful for, our Satellite Partners spring to mind! Many thanks to:

Put a little obedience into your day, everyday!
The AWS Dog Obedience class teaches people and their dogs how to use training in their everyday lives. An obedience class provides instruction for living with your dog in a great relationship. To have a truly well-mannered dog, you need to reinforce the behaviors that you want during the course of your everyday life. In truth, dogs (and people) are constantly learning every second of every day. Here are some ways to involve "real life" in your training practice.
In the house. Practice having your dog do sits for treats and toys. Use down-stays while you work on the computer, talk on the phone, watch TV, cook dinner, etc. The dog learns to be quiet and relaxed during times that you are busy and need to work.
Out and about. Take your dog with you to run errands. They can sit before entering and exiting the car. There are many dog-friendly stores that you can take your dog to and practice heeling in the aisles and sit-stay while checking out.
These are just a few of the situations your dog will learn to handle while at AWS classes. Most of all your dog can learn to use manners to earn him "what he wants." We provide a fun atmosphere because training your dog should be fun!
