Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic Opens at AWS!

The Shelter Spay and Neuter Clinic officially opened on May 4th to serve the low income community and their owned cats. Already, dozens have brought their cats in to be spayed or neutered.

Located at the Animal Welfare Society, the clinic is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays by appointment only.  The cost is $39.95.  Rabies vaccinations are available for an additional $8.00.

"Opening a Spay Neuter Clinic at the shelter has been long term goal for me," said Dr. Steve Askin, the Shelter Spay and Neuter Clinic's veterinarian. "It is so rewarding to see it a reality. These cats need our services and I am happy to be the one providing them."

AWS volunteers are helping out at the clinic to help keep labor costs down. In addition to giving the cats complimentary pedicures, the volunteers sterilize equipment, fill out the intake and release paperwork, and monitor their health after surgery.

"The people who are calling for appointments are very grateful for the opportunity," said Judy, a long time AWS volunteer and new clinic volunteer. "Many of the cats coming in are cats that people took into their homes to protect them from the elements."

If you or someone you know would qualify for an appointment at the clinic, please call 207-985-3244 to schedule a surgery.

If you are interested in volunteering at the clinic, please contact Kathy at 207-985-3244 x121.

 Kitten Shower a Huge Success!

The Animal Welfare Society held its 9th annual Kitten Shower to prepare for the arrival of the many kittens that will be needing our care this year. Each spring, more than 500 cats and kittens will go directly into volunteer foster homes where they will be nurtured until they are ready to be spayed or neutered and made available for adoption. This year, a record number of groups entered the "Project Kitten Challenge," collecting donations of cat and kitten supplies.

Sponsored by Amica Insurance, the festive event draws  young and old.  Volunteers from Amica's Scarborough office greet the donors as they arrive and weigh the donations. This year a record, 2,214 pounds of cat and kitten supplies were collected!

Congratulations to Brownie Troop 1224 of Waterboro, our winners in the Project Kitten Challenge! They will receive a behind the scenes tour of the shelter with a chance to spend time with shelter pets and a pizza party.

Girl Scout Troop 392 of York earned their Bronze Award by managing the bake sale table and collecting donations.

Host, Shannon Moss from WMTW, Channel 8, thanked the many groups who participated, announced the winners of the Photo Contest and presented people with their winning raffle prizes. More than 40 local businesses and individuals donated baskets, gift certificates and prizes for the Kitten Shower Raffle and the month long Raffle Calendar.
