Project Kitten Challenge to Benefit AWS

Spring is in the air and the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) is gearing up for the kittens who will arrive and need our care this spring and summer. "Kitten Season" is an annual occurrence, referring to the time when cats prefer to give birth, early spring through summer.

The AWS is challenging civic organizations, classrooms and other groups to take the "Project Kitten Challenge" by collecting much needed donations of supplies to help care for the many kittens and mother cats we will care for and bring them to the event.

The Kitten Shower will be held on Saturday, May 14th, from 11am-2pm at the Shelter on Holland Road.  It includes a photo contest, bakesale, luncheon items,

many raffle items, and craft items for sale.

The Animal Welfare Society is asking for donations of cat litter, wet and dry kitten food, kitten milk replacement (KMR), cat beds and kitten toys. On the day of the kitten shower, donations from the wish list will be weighed and the winning group will receive a behind the scenes tour of the Shelter and a Pizza Party!

Youth Summer Program at the Shelter

The Animal Welfare Society is pleased to announce the return of our four day Summer Camp Program at the Shelter on Holland Road in West Kennebunk.

This hands-on program allows the opportunity to feed, groom, socialize and exercise resident animals.  The children learn skills relating to animal care, responsibility and compassion.

Camps for children ages 7-10 begin on Monday July 11th and July 18th.

Camps beginning on the following four Mondays July 25 through August 15th cater to children ages ten to fourteen.

This is a rewarding opportunity for kids to experience life at the shelter with our fun-loving, furry friends!

The schedule includes a trip to Gray Animal Farm, crafts and a scrapbook about their experience.  Find more information on our website or contact Lona at 207-985-3244, ext. 109.

Many MEOWS (thank yous) to the Caring Veterinarians in our community!

The staff and volunteers of the Animal Welfare Society wish to thank the following veterinary clinics for their participation in the AWS 2011 Spay Day Campaign.  Because of their generous contribution and the work of dedicated volunteers nearly 474 cats from low income households were spayed and neutered in February, thus preventing the births of thousands of unwanted kittens.
