Featured Long Term Residents!

Although adoptions at the Animal Welfare Society have been very strong this year, for some reason some of our incredible residents have been overlooked!

Meet three of our current Long Term Residents. In the 8+ weeks that they've been with us, they've stolen our hearts, and we hope that they'll work their way into yours, too.

Introducing Mustang, an eight year old Greyhound/Husky Mix! Mustang came to AWS the first week of September and would make the right family an INCREDIBLY loving, fun and loyal pet. Mustang is a quiet, gentle soul with an eager to please, "peppy" side and a laid back couch potato side. He is smart and well behaved with impeccable manners. Mustang is an affectionate boy who loves to go for car rides and spend quality time with his people. Sound like the dog you've been waiting for? He is waiting for you too! Don't let this treasure pass you by!

Here's Thumper! Thumper is a loving, cuddly Lop Bunny who has been living at the AWS since May. He is a gentle, tolerant boy with excellent litterbox habits! The one thing that sets him apart from the other bunnies is that his nails grow faster than most and will need to be trimmed on a regular basis. It is a task that your Veterinarian can perform inexpensively or you can learn to do yourself. Our staff and volunteers will tell you that he will be worth this bit of minor grooming once you open your heart and home to his sweet, loving personality.

Finally, meet Poe! Visitors, staff and volunteers alike ask "why?"  Why is Poe still here and not in a home?? He will celebrate one year as an AWS resident on November 8th.  He is a fun-loving cat with charm and charisma. In fact, one regular visitor paid to place an ad for him in the local paper.  But, he's still here, living in a community room waiting for that special someone to scoop him up and take him home. He loves toys, catnip and attention. Like most cats, he also likes his "me time". Seriously, if you have been thinking about bringing a mature yet feisty cat into your life, come to the Animal Welfare Society and meet Poe, he is a real gem!

Keep Pets Safe this Halloween!

· Keep pets safely inside, away from trick-or-treaters and other Halloween activities. This will ensure that pets won't become frightened or feel threatened at the sight of noisy costumed children. Frequently opened doors provide a perfect opportunity for escape, which can go unnoticed during all of the commotion.  Be sure all pets are wearing collars with ID tags in case of accidental escape.

· Keep candy out of your pet's reach. Candy can be harmful to pets and chocolate is toxic to cats, dogs, and ferrets.  If you suspect your pet has ingested a potentially dangerous substance, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

· Keep pets away from decorations. Flames in jack-o-lanterns and candles can quickly singe, burn or set fire to a pet's fur.  Pets can become tangled in hanging decorations like streamers or fake cobwebs and can choke on some decorations if they chew on them.

· Resist the urge to put your furry friend in costume. Most pets dislike the confinement of costumes and masks, and flowing capes can cause injuries if pets get caught on somethingIf you do dress up your pet, make sure the costume isn't annoying or unsafe. It should not constrict the animal's movement or hearing, vision or impede his ability to breathe or bark. Keep a look out for small, dangling, or easily chewed-off pieces on the costume that your pet could choke on.

· Don't bring the family dog along for trick-or-treating.  Dogs may become difficult to handle during the noise and confusion of the festivities. A lost dog or dog bite will quickly end your Halloween fun.

· Nocturnal animals, such as raccoons, opossums and foxes, will also be out looking for food, so your best bet is to keep your distance from wild animals if you come across some while trick-or-treating.
