Summertime Hazards for Pets
Dogs and cats are at an increased risk of contracting heartworm during the summer. Transmitted by a bite from an infected mosquito, heartworm disease can be fatal if not treated. Check with your veterinarian for the best schedule for heartworm testing and preventive medication for your pet.
Allowing your dog to ride in the bed of a truck or remain in a car during the summer months is extremely unsafe. To find out why, read this.
Protect your pet from the heat by providing him/her with large
amounts of fresh water and keeping them indoors with you and providing
plenty of shade when they are spending time outdoors.
Doing a daily tick check on you and your dog is important if you spend
time outside with your dog in areas where ticks like to hang out. If you find a tick on your dog, don't panic! Follow these quick and easy steps to safely remove the tick.
Keep your cat indoors. Though your feline friend may wish to explore the outdoors, cats who are permitted to go outside are at an increased risk of disease and injury from vehicles or other animals.
On hot days, limit your pet's exercise to the early morning
or evening hours. Also, keep in mind that the hot asphalt can burn your
pet's paws.

Featured Success
Hello! We adopted Tamika in 8-08 - she is a wonderful cat and a great addition to our family. She is gentle and sweet and loves to sit on the bathroom counter. We kept her shelter name, and she is nicknamed "Mika". In March, we adopted Mongoose - a giant, white, fluffball of love. "Goosie" is what he is known as now is always up for a cuddle, and will begin purring the moment we pet him.
What wonderful pets we are blessed to have! Lots of love,
Kristen, Marc, Cole and Riley
