Spring means green trees, flowers and...kittens?
We all look forward to spring...longer days, leaving the mittens in the closet, and opening the windows to some fresh air. Here at the shelter, we are busy preparing for "kitten season". Each year, from May through September, AWS sees more than 1,000 cats and kittens come through our doors needing food, medical treatment and a safe place to stay. This time of year is not only financially taxing for the shelter, but it is also emotionally draining. Here are some easy ways you can help: - Make a donation to AWS to help us cover the costs of spay and neuter surgeries for all of the cats and kittens that come to us, to help us buy kitten milk replacement (KMR) for unweaned kittens, and provide food and litter for all of our residents.
- Encourage your friends and family members to have their own cats spayed and neutered.
- Become a foster family! Many of the cats and kittens that come to AWS need a bit of time in a home to grow stronger before being available for adoption. If you have some extra room in your heart, learn more about our fostering program!

And they're off...to their forever homes!
AWS is proud of our success in rescuing and rehoming retired Greyhounds. But don't let the word 'retired' fool you! The average racer ends its career at age three and has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years. Greyhounds make wonderful family companions, and while they are the fastest canine breed - reaching speeds of up to 45 mph - they need no more exercise than any other dog! Greyhounds are sensitive, intelligent and well-mannered. Because all of our Greyhounds have been track racers their entire lives, they will need a little bit of help adjusting to life in a home...they'll need someone to teach them about things like stairs and mirrors. Read more about Greyhounds...Stop by AWS today to meet Eugene, Mikey, and Letterman!

Success!
Cupid and Tinsel went home together!
Their new family writes: "We recently adopted Cupid and Tinsel from AWS. How we got them is a funny story. We were watching T.V. seeing if there was a snowday and on NECN there was an 'adopt a pet' segment. As soon as I saw Tinsel I knew I had to get her. The day they were available, there was a large snowstorm. My son woke the whole family up at 5 am. After my son cleaned off the car we got started...we were coming from Massachusetts! When we reached the end of the driveway we got stuck in the snow and my son hopped out of the car and dug us out. When we arrived at about 7am, we were the first in line. After waiting four hours for the shelter to open, we finally went in. There they were...all 11 pups running around licking and playing with us! After about ten minutes we had to make our decision...my son wanted Cupid who ran right up to him when he came in the room. I wanted Tinsel...she had the cutest face. So now we have Cupid for my son and Tinsel for my daughter. Now everyone is happy!"

Featured Pet
The AWS staff cares deeply for each set of paws and whiskers that comes in the door. But sometimes, there is an individual that plucks at the heart strings
even more. Benny is one of those.
Whether in foster care or at AWS, Benny has been a cat full of love,
seeking a comfy lap for a nap since August of 2008.
This 7 year
old spayed female likes to be in people's company and now that she has
become a Long Term Resident, she seems to be getting depressed.
People here are always on the move. She wants them to sit and stay with her a while.
Please spend some time visiting with Benny and make her day. Maybe, just maybe, your lap will be the one she has been waiting for.
Benny has diabetes that is being managed by her diet. If you would like
more information about Benny, stop by or call 207-985-3244 and ask for
Kirstin.
