AmericanIssueWhy are we Arguing?
Recently, I was in a fairly heated argument with someone who felt that global warming was a hoax.  He started the argument by saying he does believe in recycling, but global warming is a brainwashing conspiracy by the Obama administration to get more taxes and create bigger government.  I'm a fiscally conservative, moderate independent...but I'm also someone who believes that global warming is a potentially catastrophic threat to my children; so of course I pushed back.  After the exchange of positions, neither of us changed the other person's view on global warming (his argument of million year sun spots and my argument of human activity over the last 50 years didn't get through the dogma).

As I walked away, I realized that I had missed an opportunity.  Rather than argue about global warming I should have focused on the areas we agree on.  He seemed to have been an intelligent and capable person.  He believed in recycling which I should have complimented and then asked if he believes in keeping his appliances at home efficient by cleaning his refrigeration coils and maintaining his HVAC unit.  He seemed like the kind of person with common sense, and I'm sure he would have answered yes.  He also seemed like a patriotic person, and I should have asked him if he believes we should reduce our dependence on the Middle East oil supply....again I would wager he would have said yes (though his solution may have been to drill while mine would be efficiency and technology).

My point is that rather than argue, we should have found common ground.  Americans need to become energy efficient and reduce our consumption of fossil fuels.  Whether we do that because we believe in global warming, for patriotic reasons, or simply to save money, it really doesn't matter.  All that matters is we get past the debates and get moving with action....and HarneTech believes we need to get moving fast.

P.S.  Did everyone catch  what the Pentagon is now projecting and planning in regards to global warming over the next 30 years (New York Times: Climate Change seen as Threat to U.S. Security)....this is no longer a liberal democrat issue...it is an American issue.

US Dept. of Treasury - Renewable Energy Grants
Green SchoolThe U.S. Department of the Treasury and the U.S. Department of Energy recently announced they are accepting applications for a program that will make direct payments to companies that create and place in service renewable energy facilities. The two Departments estimate distributing at least $3 billion in financial support to approximately 5,000 bio-mass, solar, wind, and other types of renewable energy production facilities.

"These payments will help spur major private sector investments in clean energy and create new jobs for America's workers.  It is part of our broad effort to double our renewable energy capacity in the next few years and make sure that America leads the world in creating the new clean energy economy of the future," said Energy Secretary Steven Chu.

Grants are available to eligible property placed in service in 2009 or 2010.  The grant amount can be up to 30% of eligible solar energy, fuel cell, or small wind turbine property.  This cash grant is to be taken in lieu of the federal business energy investment tax credit (ITC).

HarneTech can help you to determine the best renewable energy solution for your business and take advantage of these funds.  If you are interested please contact Michael Wilder.

Additional Funding Made Available - IL Energy Plan
Funding under the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) directed to the State of Illinois Energy Plan has spurred the development of new programs to fund cost-effective energy projects that create and retain Illinois jobs, reduce energy consumption, increase renewable energy capacity, and reduce green house gas emissions.

The Illinois Energy Plan is the most comprehensive and innovative program to date to address the state's energy needs and is expected to strengthen Illinois' position as a leader in Sustainable, Clean, and Renewable Energy.  For HarneTech LLC customers, opportunities exist in two of the State's new programs.

THERMAL EFFICIENCY PROGRAM FOR PUBLIC FACILITIES
The program will provide grants to public sector entities (municipalities, schools, park districts, community colleges and public universities) for improving the energy efficiency of thermal equipment.  Grant awards of up to $500,000 (not to exceed 75% of total project costs) for solar thermal air (SolarWall) and solar thermal hot water (Enerworks), are eligible solutions at public facilities. Other restrictions apply. Applications are due October 1, 2009.

COMMUNITY RENEWABLE ENERGY PROGRAM
The program is focused on medium scale, "Community Renewable Energy" projects for businesses (up to 30% of project costs), as well as not-for-profits and public sector entities (up to 50% of project costs).  This program is targeted at renewable energy projects (like solar) that provide energy for the applicants' own needs.  Program funds are available for new photovoltaic energy systems, as well as solar thermal systems over $100,000 in total project costs.  Other restrictions apply. Applications are due October 26, 2009.

For additional information about these or other Illinois energy programs, contact Michael Wilder.

HarneTech LLC & School Districts
On May 14, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act providing $6.4 billion for "the modernization, renovation, or repair of public school facilities, and for other purposes."  This bill is currently in the U.S. Senate's Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions subcommittees.  If this piece of legislation passes the Senate in the fall and is signed by President Obama, it will provide funds to every school district for projects meeting the following building standards: LEED, Energy Star, Green Globes, CHPS (California High-Performing Schools) Criteria, or an equivalent program.

Green School

HarneTech has contacted over 75 school districts throughout the Chicagoland area to inform them of this pending legislation and determine what, if any, assistance HarneTech can provide in order to ensure these funds are used to improve children's learning environments.  Particularly, HarneTech has been focusing on providing school districts with energy audits since Section 102.b.3.B.ii of the House-passed version states:

"... conducts an independent audit by a third-party entity, and is certified by the State, substantiating the overall condition of the public school facilities and the need for modernization, renovation, or repair."

Please contact Drew Trammell to learn more about the 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act or pass his name on to your local school district to make sure your community is on top of acquiring and implementing these funds.
