Wisconsin Historical Society National History Day in Wisconsin Update

April 2009
National History Day logo Greetings!

Greetings from National History Day in Wisconsin! Congratulations on a successful 2009 Regional Event season! I was fortunate to see many of you and your students at our seven regional events. I was impressed with the quality of historical scholarship and enthusiasm of these young historians. The 2009 Wisconsin State Event is fast approaching. Keep reading for more information on the competition!

STATE REGISTRATION DUE ON APRIL 20!
Registration materials for the state event are due received at the Wisconsin Historical Society on Monday, April 20. This deadline is less than two weeks away! Please remind your students that it is their responsibility to ensure that materials arrive at the WHS by the deadline. We will confirm that registrations are received online, but students are encouraged to mail materials with tracking or delivery confirmation, especially if they are unsure if materials will arrive on time. Paper and website entries are also due at the WHS on this date!

ARE YOUR STUDENTS COMING TO STATE?
If you have students advancing to the state event, encourage them to keep working on their projects. Not only are revisions allowed between competitions, students are encouraged to improve their projects before the next level of competition. Revising projects is part of the learning process, as well as the experience of NHD!

NON-COMPETITIVE NHD SCHOOL?
Did you work with NHD in your classroom this year but not participate in the NHD competition cycle? Please send us an email and let us know! We try to keep accurate statistics on participation in the state and your information is important to us. Notifying us of your participation will also ensure that you are on the mailing list for the 2010 curriculum materials.

SIGN UP FOR 2010 CURRICULUM MATERIALS
The 2009 NHD year isn't quite over yet, but we're already taking requests for the 2010 Curriculum Packet. All teachers that participated in NHD in 2009 are automatically signed up for the 2010 packet if they completed a school registration form. All other interested educators can sign up online! Packets will begin mailing in August 2009.

Theme Logo 2010NHD 2010: INNOVATION IN HISTORY
During the 2009-2010 school year, National History Day invites students to research topics related to the theme: Innovation in History: Impact and Change. If you had already looked ahead at future themes, you'll notice that this is a different wording for the theme. The national NHD office has modified the theme slightly in an effort to make it more accessible to students and to force the issue of immediate impact and long term change because of the innovation. You can read the 2010 theme sheet on our website.
