Since 1976, the Rev. Dr. Marie Fortune has been a pioneer in the field of religion and domestic violence and a leading national expert on sexual exploitation by religious leaders. She is the founder and senior analyst at the Seattle-based FaithTrust Institute (faithtrustinstitute.org)
The Rev. Fortune is an ordained pastor in the United Church of Christ as well as an author, educator, practicing ethicist and theologian. She served on the National Advisory Council on Violence Against Women for the U.S. Department of Justice from 1994-2002. She is the author of Is Nothing Sacred? The Story of a Pastor, the Women he Sexually Abused, and the Congregation he Nearly Destroyed (United Church Press, 1999), Keeping the Faith: Guidance for Christian Women Facing Abuse (Harper, 1995), and Love Does No Harm: Sexual Ethics for the Rest of Us (Continuum Publishing Group, 1998).
The symposium begins with registration and coffee at 8:30 a.m. and the opening address by the Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, at 9:00 a.m. Dr. Fortune will begin her presentation at 9:15 a.m., which includes a video presentation and a panel discussion with judicatory leaders. The day will conclude at 12:00 p.m.
