Pentecost

On the day of Pentecost all the Lord's followers were together in one place. Suddenly there was a noise from heaven like the sound of a mighty wind! It filled the house where they were meeting. Then they saw what looked like fiery tongues moving in all directions, and a tongue came and settled on each person there. The Holy Spirit took control of everyone, and they began speaking whatever languages the Spirit let them speak.

Many religious Jews from every country in the world were living in Jerusalem. And when they heard this noise, a crowd gathered. But they were surprised, because they were hearing everything in their own languages. Acts 2:1-6

I have always been fascinated with this story of the beginning of the early church recorded in the book of Acts. The word for Spirit in Hebrew (Ruach) and in Greek (Pneuma) is the same word for wind or breath. In this amazing telling the writer describes a powerful wind filling the house where the disciples had gathered following the Resurrection and Christ's command to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit. Some translate this as a "violent wind" or a "gale force" wind or a "rushing mighty wind" but however it is described one soon discovers that it is the Holy Spirit, the very breath of God that has come upon them. "Thank You"
Life's Simplest Stewardship Prayer!

Stewardship Message from Dan Oliver

Dan Oliver and IndiaOccasionally life presents situations that leave us wondering how to respond. We don't know where to turn or how to act.  We find ourselves at a loss for even what words to utter.   We have all been there.

One of my favorite Theologians, Meister Eckhart, once said,

"If the only prayer you say in your life is 'thank you,' that would suffice."

Literally, as I wrote this quote, my wife texted me that a dear friend of ours has just passed away.  Suddenly, without warning, I find myself in the midst of one of those life situations.  Our friend was six months younger than me. She was the mother of one of my daughter's good school friends.

How do I respond? Where do I turn...how do I act...what words do I utter? READ MORE
What is Miracle on 43rd Street?
And, How Can I Help?

Miracle on 43rd Street is our region's 2012 mission outreach in our own backyard June 27-July 1, 2012.  In collaboration with the Disciples Women, this unique service project focuses on bringing the best of our gifts, resources and talents as an expression of God's love and empowerment to a welcoming community.  This "hands on" work is a visible witness to what it means to be one church!

The Miracle will take place at United Christian Church, located at 625 East 43rd Street in Los Angeles. The church is nestled in a demographically changing neighborhood in one of the City's most crowded communities. United's weekly hot meal program is a well-known ministry in the community.
