PACIFIC SOUTHWEST REGION DISCIPLES OF CHRIST
Don Dewey & Susan Gonzales Dewey
Co-Regional Ministers
Mile Marker #18
Regional Goal #4: To be a well organized and administered Region
"It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." ~Ephesians 4:11-13
In the real estate business the motto is: location, location, location. Perhaps the model for a well organized and well administered Region might be: communication, communication, communication!
Serving congregations first in the San Diego area at Vista La Mesa Christian Church for twelve years, and then in Ventura at First Christian Church for ten years, we often felt disconnected from the hub of Regional activity. It always seemed that whatever was going on in the Region meant at least a 2hr to 3hr drive for us to participate. In each situation, being at the outer edges of our Region (the Southern California part), we would often hear complaints about being isolated and out of touch (think about Las Vegas & Hawaii).
That is why in both congregations we served we made a concerted effort to connect them to the wider church, at the Regional and General Church levels. Prior to becoming Co-Regional Minister, Susan served for 15 years as Deployed Staff for Women's Ministries which connected her and the women of our churches to the larger Disciple Women's Ministry. Don also worked with the Region's Youth Leadership Team as an Adult leader for 18 years and also served on the New Church Development Committee almost 10 years and chaired it for 8 of those years. We supported our Region's camp and conference program by not only sending numerous youth but serving as Counselors and/or Directors almost every summer as well as for our winter camps. In other words, we were intentional about keeping our congregations connected and minimizing the feelings of isolation.
We have come to discover in our visits to congregations as Regional Ministers, that this feeling of disconnect is not only felt by congregations and pastors on the edges of our Region but with most of our congregations and pastors. We began to hear over and over again people say things like, "we don't know one another" referring to other Disciples congregations. We also heard, "Congregations need to know they are part of larger body of faith & know what is in the relationship with the wider Disciples fellowship".
To begin to address this issue of communication we have completely redone our Region's website to make it more useful, informative, and accessible with resources, news updates, calendaring of events, etc. to connect and support our congregations and pastors in their ministry. We have developed our E-Shout weekly online news service to communicate directly with individuals, pastors and congregations. We have E-News and our monthly Newsletter that keep current information about General Church happenings, Regional Church happenings and significant events and changes going on with churches and pastors on the local scene. We have begun to expand the table for our pastors' gatherings to address the whole community of our Region and added a pastors' summit to our annual Regional Assembly/Gathering to strengthen the connection with our pastors and leaders.
We have set in motion a full assessment of our Loch Leven camp to evaluate its best usage and development potential. We have begun a Region wide Long Range planning assessment to focus our resources and ministry efforts. We have also started a Legacy Team to begin to work with congregations that are considering closing their visible ministry and exploring options for continuing their ministry into the future in new and creative ways. And with the hiring of Dan Oliver as Minister of Stewardship and Giving, we are seeking to expand and strengthen the support which undergirds all of our ministries.
We believe that the purpose for being "a well organized and well administered region" is to do the best and most effective ministry we can for the good of the whole church. To do that involves a mutual covenant of communication and participation on behalf of both the Region and each local congregation and pastor. In other words, local congregations and pastors must make the effort to be intentionally involved and participate in the wider church and the Region must do its best job to service and resource the pastors and congregations of its Region. As your Regional ministers, we are committed to this partnership and invite you join us in making this Region the best it can be!
Together in ministry,
Don & Susan

Gathering of the *Geezers!
Thursday Afternoon, October 21, 3:00 p.m.
Take
a break with the Geezers for an afternoon of fun, food and fellowship. .
. make your own banana split with wide variety of toppings of your own
choice. You can decorate the top with a cherry - but you have to bring
your cherry! You ask -Will this Geezer Whopper be appropriate to my diet?
Probably not! But life is short (in fact, it is getting shorter by the day for most of us) . . . So eat dessert first, eat dessert last, and eat it often. That's what we Geezers celebrate!
The spin of the Gathering?
Just
imagine yourself under the old oak tree, afloat with stories galore,
reminiscing the times when you won the Geezer Lottery or took the Geezer
Climb up the El Capitan - or greeted folk at the church door. It's
all that and more - besides there's ' keyboard kapers' to accent your
fondest memories. Simply put, this is but a Geezer Glimpse - but you
know how it is with we Geezers. Geezers love surprises!
Your reservation is almost free! That's
a Geezer Grub Steak of eight (8) Grezerwallenlazech's, or $3.49 per
Geezer (be ye young or old). Pay at the Geezer Door when you arrive! But ye must first reserve your Geezer Guest space. Note the bottom line. Too many Geezers and not enough split-building provisions, not a good thing.
Geezer your way to Pomona, October 21 - From your Geezer G-Execs (PS) While this is a non-profit making gathering, all Geezer Gathering profit to benefit the Pension Fund's 13th Check.

4 GOALS FOR THE PSW REGION

This year the Pacific Southwest Region is embarking on a long range planning process. We have called together some fabulous strategic planners, and they will be working with data collected from small group discussions around the Region based on four key goals.
Those goals are:
1) To be One Church;
2) To be a Missional Church;
3) To develop vital, healthy,growing congregations;
4) To be a well organized and administered Region.
Along with our Region's vision and mission statements, these goals are in part a response to our General Minister and President's mandate "to be a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world."
Because we value the input from everyone within our wide diverse Regional family, we want to receive from you your hopes and dreams, visions and ideas as well as needs you see for our Region as they relate to these four key goals. Below are the goals and questions related to each one that we elicit your responses. We have posted for your convenience on our new website as together we seek to strengthen our witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
We believe God calls the Pacific Southwest Region to be a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world, as part of the one body of Christ welcoming all to the Lord's Table just as God has welcomed us.
OUR VISION, to be a faithful, growing church that demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and passion for justice (Micah 6:8); and OUR MISSION, to be and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, witnessing, loving and serving from out doorsteps "to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8)
OUR GOALS: 1) To be one Church: We are unified in our relationship to Christ, how do we unify in our relationships to one another throughout the region? What value is there in relation to one another across the entire region, with our incredible blessed diversity?
2) To be a Missional Church: What does it mean to be a missional church? What is the price you are willing to pay to be a missional church?
3) To be developing vital, healthy, growing congregations. How do you define a vital, healthy, growing congregation? What do congregations need to support being vital, healthy and growing?
4) To be a well organized and well administered region. How can we be a well organized and well administered region? What resources do we need to mobilize to be well organized and administered congregations?
You can mail your responses to: Regional Church Office: 2401 N. Lake Ave., Altadena, CA 91001

The Older Adult Ministry Committee, Vance Martin, Chair, is looking for additional members due to three recent resignations it has received.
The main work of this committee to date has been developing policies and procedures for the distribution of funds to qualified Senior Adult Disciples who need either short-term or long-term financial assistance. The funds available for distribution come from money turned over to the PSW Region that were originally given to support the Fellowship of John through the former California Christian Home. In addition, there are funds available from the Kok Family Trust through the Torrey Pines Christian Church. Since July 2009, funds have been distributed to as many as 10 Senior Adults who met the criteria for assistance.
Future work of the committee will be focused on assisting congregations to more effectively involve their Senior Adults in ministries that both enrich them and enable them to serve others.
This committee has been meeting monthly, usually on the first Monday of each month, rotating meetings between Fullerton and Orange, which are central locations for the members of the committee who come from the San Gabriel Valley as well as Orange and San Diego Counties. This meeting pattern could be modified to fit the needs of persons interested in serving with us.
The current membership includes only retired persons, however, we do not want it to wind up as "an introverted chat room for old folks." We need some non-seniors and non-retirees, currently employed, or volunteers, in both public and private human services agencies that serve seniors, geriatritians, physical therapists, etc.
If you are interested in becoming a member of this committee, or would like to know more about its work, please contact Ed Linberg, a member of this group, at 909-392-6688 or by e-mail at: emlinberg@earthlink.net.

Chapman University recognized for support to first-generation students Nancy Brink, Director of Church Relations at Chapman University in Orange, CA, sent me an article last week that I want to pass on to you. Chapman was founded by Disciples and we have a very strong student ministry there. The article highlights a special Chapman scholarship available to all first-generation students-students who are the first in their family to go to college. This financial support has benefited many Disciples on Campus students in the past and will do so in the future. If you are aware of anyone who fits the criteria for this scholarship (see article below) and may be interested in attending Chapman, please have them contact Nancy Brink or Cisa Payuyo at 714-997-6760. Disciples students automatically receive additional scholarship support.
Chapman University's outstanding efforts to attract first-generation students and other underserved populations has earned it a spot in the new Center for Student Opportunity's 2011 College Access & Opportunity Guide. The publication is a comprehensive college guidebook that highlights universities that make exceptional efforts to create supportive programs and environments for low-income, first-generation college-bound students. Inclusion in the guidebook is an honor and recognition of the university's longstanding commitment to assisting first-generation college students, said Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief Admission Officer Michael Drummy.
"Chapman's inclusion in the Center for Student Opportunity's 2011 College Access and Opportunity Guide is the result of our extensive efforts to reach out to disadvantaged students through a variety of programs both on and off campus, as well as our Thurgood Marshall Scholars program, which helps fund students who would be the first from their immediate family to attend college," Drummy said. The Thurgood Marshall Scholars program was established in the mid-1980's, and about 40 students a year receive assistance from it as part of their financial aid and/or scholarship package, Drummy added.
The Center for Student Opportunity (CSO) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting higher-education opportunities for first-generation and other historically underserved college-bound students. CSO programs serve colleges and universities, counselors and community-based organizations in support of their college access goals. More information about CSO is available at the organization's website.

10th Anniversary
of Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children
Families, non-profit
organizations, elected officials, Major League Baseball teams and corporations
across the country are gearing up to celebrate the 10th Anniversary
of Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your ChildrenTM on
September 27, 2010. Family Day is the national movement that
reminds parents that Dinner Makes A Difference! The National
Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA)
at Columbia University
launched Family Day in 2001 after its research consistently found that
the more often kids eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to
smoke, drink or use drugs. Last year, more
than 40 faith-based organizations celebrated Family Day. There
are many ways that you can celebrate Family Day. For example, you could
write about Family Day in your bulletin and publications, mention Family
Day in your sermon on Sunday, September 26th, link to www.CASAFamilyDay.org
from your website, encourage parents to take the Family Day Pledge at www.CASAFamilyDay.org,
mention Family Day during your radio or TV programs or host Family
Day events. By celebrating Family
Day, you will reinforce your commitment to the well being of families. Together we can
continue championing the fight against drug, tobacco and alcohol abuse among
children and teens and raise healthier kids. For more information about Family
Day, please see the attached fact sheets, sample blurbs, sample press
release and participant guidelines or visit www.CASAFamilyDay.org.
Please feel free to contact Nancy Gavilanes,

Project IMPACT Updates and Events

Did you know... Project IMPACT recently began a new partnership with Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), a federally funded snack program for at-risk children and adults. CACFP plays a vital role in creating and maintaining quality, affordable care for school-age children. Project IMPACT has served approximately 200 snacks per month in 2010. Upon arriving at IMPACT after-school programs, most children have had nothing to eat for 3-4 hours. Now, thanks to our CACFP funding, our afterschool staff serves healthy snacks at the beginning of each program. This assures that the children are not longer hungry and can fully participate in all of the educational activities. By giving the children the fuel they need to learn, the snack plays a similar role at the end of the day that the School Breakfast program plays at the start. Nicole Artry ~ Director of Snack Food Program
"Teacher, I AM Hungry!
My story is very simple...I was filling in for an intern/tutor at Ascension Catholic Elementary School after school tutoring program. There were a group of nine Kindergarten and first grade students in the class. The numbers was considered large for that age group, so I asked the students to raise their hands if they had any questions. I explained the lesson to them and continued to pass out worksheets to the students. Several of the students raised their hands asking for my assistance with the work. One precious little boy with big brown eyes, and shaggy hair held his hand the highest. When I asked "How may I help you?" he said "Teacher, I am hungry!" For a moment my mind went blank as I was not anticipating such a statement. I had nothing but mints in my purse, which I quickly gave to him. That day after tutoring, I went out and shopped for healthy after school snacks for the students.
As you can imagine, I was elated to find out that Project IMPACT recently started an after school snack program, Now, each day, our students look forward to getting free healthy snacks. This is just one more way that Project IMPACT provides wrap around services for the communities we serve.

ECUMENICAL AND INTERFAITH NEWS Presented by the Ecumenics and Interfaith Relations Committee (EIRC) of the Pacific Southwest Region (DOC) and the Southern California/Nevada Conference (UCC) 9/2010
 A MOSQUE NEAR GROUND ZERO?
As this issue of monthly mailing is being prepared, there is a controversy in our country over plans by a group to construct a major Islamic center, named Cordova House, including a mosque but also facilities for community gatherings, classes, etc., at a site close to "Ground Zero," where the World Trade Center stood before it was destroyed by the Al Queda attackers on September 11, 2001.
This period of time also happens to be especially holy for Muslims: August 11 to September 10 is the fast month of Ramadan, during which they take no food after sunrise and before sundown each day, for the sake of deepening their relationship with God. Americans, most of whom are Christians, are being confronted in these ways with the major presence of a different religion in our midst. Unfortunately, some of our fellow believers are reacting with fear and hostility to the increased visibility of our Muslim neighbors. There is a movement to prohibit the planned Muslim community center near Ground Zero, on the grounds that it would amount to a dishonoring of the 9/11 victims. Worse, one large church has called for an international "Qu'ran Burning Day" on Sept. 11 (the Qu'ran or Koran being the holy scripture of the Muslim people). Clearly these folks don't remember that it was Adolf Hitler who became famous for burning books. A recent statement by Rev. Dr. Michael "Kinnamon, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches, addresses this issue. Kinnamon notes that there are indeed extremely painful memories and deep emotions connected with Ground Zero for hundreds of thousands of Americans. But he says that is precisely why the Muslim community center near the site should be encouraged. Dr. Kinnamon notes that a considerable number of those who lost their lives on 9/11 were themselves Muslims. In a situation in which most Americans are just beginning to learn what Islam actually is, we must be extremely careful not to let our judgment be clouded by irrational prejudice, and fault a whole religious tradition for the heinous actions of a very small group of radical terrorists. The National Council of Churches has issued a statement supporting the building of Cordova House "as a living monument to mark the tragedy of 9/11 through a center dedicated to learning, compassion, and respect for all peoples." We must at all costs guard against a revival of the bigotry of the past which, at the hands of Christian Americans from Europe, so scarred the original indigenous inhabitants of our land and then also the African-American peoples who were brought here. The NCC statement ends with a call "to embrace again the words of Christ: love your neighbor as yourself."
ECUMENICAL COURTESY AND ECUMENICAL HONESTY
In keeping with the commitment to unity of our denomination, each year the Pacific Southwest Region invites one ecumenical guest and one interfaith guest to attend our Regional Assembly and to bring greetings to the delegates from our churches from their respective religious communities. Our guests this year will be Father Alexei Smith, who is the official ecumenical representative of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles; and Swami Sarvadevananda, an Indian Hindu leader who is associated with the Los Angeles Vedanta Society. Delegates are encouraged to meet them and have conversation with Father Alexei and Swami during the two days of the Assembly.
There are about 1.2 billion Roman Catholics in almost all the countries of the world, and close to a billion Hindus (mostly in India). So on the basis of population alone, it behooves us to learn more about these great traditions and how the Spirit of God is operating in them. Most Disciples probably know little about the specific beliefs of Vedanta in particular and Hinduism in general, even though they have had more influence on our own society than we may realize: think, for instance, of the increasing popularity of yoga and meditation techniques in America. On the other hand, we are all likely to know something and to have opinions about the Roman Catholic Church. One of the great points of division between the Protestant and Catholic churches-beyond the very painful fact that we cannot come to the Lord's Table together-is on the question of the ordination of women. Disciples, who are accustomed to women pastors and are now experiencing the fine leadership of our regional minister, Rev. Susan Gonzales Dewey, and our national president, Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins, may have strong feelings about the refusal of the Catholic Church to ordain women. We cannot and should not duck this issue. But as a church committed to Christian unity, we need to balance ecumenical courtesy, i.e., making a guest such as Father Alexei feel very welcome and affirmed, with ecumenical honesty, i.e., making clear, when it comes up, that we respectfully disagree with the position of our sister church. Perhaps the best stance is for us to look for opportunities to ask sincere questions of Father Alexei, and other Catholic believers we know, as to why their church takes the stand they do on this matter. And then also to make clear that, even in disagreement, we gladly acknowledge the deep Christian faith and tradition of our fellow Roman Catholic believers.
HOW MANY CHRISTIANS IN CHINA?
According to the World Christian Database, considered one of the most reliable sources on religious statistics, the number of Christians in China exploded from under a million in 1970, just forty years ago, to around 120 million today-about 9% of the total Chinese population. Other sources dispute this figure and place the Christian share of the population significantly lower. Prof. Philip Jenkins, who writes on Christianity outside the North Atlantic community, thinks the figure is closer to 5%, or 65 to70 million. It is very difficult to get accurate figures because many Chinese Christians meet in house churches and are therefore not registered with the Chinese authorities. In any case, it is clear that Christianity is growing rapidly in China. And although Christians still are a fairly small minority of the population, their presence is no doubt the leaven in the lump which will transform all of China for the better in the decades to come. Pray for the Christians of China!

Filipino American Experience: Historical Book: The Making of A historic Cultural Monument
This
book chronicles the experiences of Filipinos in the early 1920s and
30s, who came in droves to America attracted to the agricultural jobs in
Central California and the sunbelt states. They were also in demand in
the salmon and fish cannery industries of the Pacific Northwest and
Alaska. Most of them were single, ambitious, young men from poor
families who were mainly interested in accumulating as much wealth as
possible and then return to their homeland as rich men. In some cases,
they also wanted to get an education.
In the "Land of the Free"
with signs that read "No Filipinos Allowed", Filipinos became the
victims of racism, deplorable living conditions, job discrimination,
exploitation and isolation from mainstream society. They were legally
excluded from owning property or marrying whom they wish because of the
color of their skin. They were not allowed in many places, not even in
churches. However, in 1928, the Disciples of Christ hosted a world
convention in the city, which led to the creation of the Filipino
Christian Fellowship, the first organization in the United States to
address the spiritual needs of early Filipinos.
In 1933, with
the help of several Disciples missionaries, it evolved as the Filipino
Christian Church. For the next half century, this church had a vital
role in the advancement of the Filipino American community in Los
Angeles. In 1998, the City of Los Angeles designated the Filipino
Christian Church as a historic cultural monument for its contributions
to the cultural development of the city and its significance to its
history.
This book salutes the important role that the Disciples
of Christ and its leaders, as well as the many members and friends of
the church played at pivotal points in our history. You may order this book by calling Ely Obillo at (310) 530-4570. It will also be available at the Regional Assembly. The cost is $25, with 20% of it donated to the Filipino Christian Church and the PSWR Camp and Conference.
