Tamara Nichols Rodenberg is the Interim President of Disciples Seminary Foundation in Claremont, CA. An ordained Disciples of Christ minister with experience in pastoral ministry and theological
education, Tamara received her undergraduate degree from Texas Christian University, studied at United Theological College in Bangalore, India, finished her M. Div. at Lexington Theological
Seminary, and completed her Ph.D. in Ecumenical Theology and Social Ethics at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, CA.
Saundra Bryant is the Executive Director of All Peoples Christian Center, a position she has held for the past twenty-six years. Her first experience with All Peoples was as a two-year-old in their day
care facility. She continued to participate in the agency's program throughout her childhood and adolescence. Saundra attended California State Polytechnic University, in Pomona, California, where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in the area of Social Work. She attained her Master's Degree in Social Work Administration and Planning from the University of Tennessee, at Knoxville. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of California.

Project IMPACT was the inspiration for a community 2009 Back to School event where 5000 under-served children were given free back packs and school supplies. This celebration, hosted at the Compton Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), was such a broad success, we have decided to do it again and YOU ARE ALL INVITED! See details below.
2010 ~ 2ND ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL CELEBRATION
"PREPARING LEADERS FOR THE FUTURE"
 If you have ever wondered what it would be like to be involved in a multi-cultural, church and community outreach, here's your chance! Saturday, August 21, 2010 from 10am-2pm, you will have a unique opportunity to be a significant part of the Church at work in the world.
 All are invited to join the 2010 Back to School Celebration. Early projections are that 10,000 at-risk kids will show up for this years event, which will be hosted at Compton Community College. All children in attendance will receive free back packs, school supplies, food, clothing and many opportunities to sign up for free services such as tutoring, mentoring, counseling, and job readiness classes. Another critical offering happening at the event, will be a health fair with over 25 agencies providing free
heath and wellness services.
 Community sponsors and collaborators include: Project IMPACT, World Vision, Compton Department of Children and Family Services, Compton Unified School District, and more. Many Disciples and non-Disciples congregations and members are also providing assistance. Some of these include: Orange FCC, Abundant Life CC, Fuente de Vida CC, Tower of Faith, West Angeles, City of Refuge, Faith Inspiration, and more.

Pastor's Conference Scholarships Announced - Less than 30 days to apply!!
Greetings Pastors,
The Office of the General Minister and President has received an anonymous
and generous gift to provide scholarships to the 2010 Pastors' Conference for any pastor who has yet to register. The 2010 Pastors' Conference is September 21-23, 2010 in San Diego, California.
Dr. Diana Butler Bass will be the featured keynote speaker and our very own, Bill Thomas, will be music director for this three day event. Our three preachers, General Minister and President Sharon Watkins, Rev. Randy Spleth, and Rev. Juan Rodriguez, will bring a powerful word about ministry and the future of the church. Spleth is pastor of Geist Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Indianapolis, Ind. Rodriguez is pastor of Iglesia del Pueblo- Hope Center Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Hammond, Ind.

Scholarships will be available on a first-come, first served basis, for the following:
- 50 First-time attendees - persons who did not attend the 2008 Pastors' Conference
- 25 New Church Pastors
- 50 Pastors of congregations with an average worship attendance less than 100
- 25 Pastors of racial / ethnic congregations
- 50 Pastors under the age of 40
Each scholarship is valued at $150. Participants can qualify in up to two areas, receiving a maximum of $300 in scholarship assistance. For example, a new church pastor, under the age of 40 can receive $300. An African-American pastor of a church with an average worship attendance under 100 can receive $300.
The current conference registration fee is $450. A person qualifying in two areas
would only have to pay $150 to attend the conference. The registration fee includes:
two-nights lodging, the conference fee, opening dinner, breakfast and lunch on
Wednesday and breakfast on Thursday, plus transportation from the San Diego airport to the hotel and back to the airport. Scholarships are in the form of a coupon code for use at the time of registration.

 The Older Adult Ministry Committee
Vance Martin, Chair, is looking for additional members due to three recent resignations it has received.
The
main work of this committee to date has been developing policies and
procedures for the distribution of funds to qualified Senior Adult
Disciples who need either short-term or long-term financial assistance.
The funds available for distribution come from money turned over to the
PSW Region that were originally given to support the Fellowship of John
through the former California Christian Home. In addition, there are
funds available from the Kok Family Trust through the Torrey Pines
Christian Church. Since July 2009, funds have been distributed to as
many as 10 Senior Adults who met the criteria for assistance.
Future
work of the committee will be focused on assisting congregations to
more effectively involve their Senior Adults in ministries that both
enrich them and enable them to serve others.
This committee has
been meeting monthly, usually on the first Monday of each month,
rotating meetings between Fullerton and Orange, which are central
locations for the members of the committee who come from the San Gabriel
Valley as well as Orange and San Diego Counties. This meeting pattern
could be modified to fit the needs of persons interested in serving with
us.
The current membership includes only retired persons,
however, we do not want it to wind up as "an introverted chat room for
old folks." We need some non-seniors and non-retirees, currently
employed, or volunteers, in both public and private human services
agencies that serve seniors, geriatritians, physical therapists, etc.

 Chapman University recognized for support to first-generation students
Nancy
Brink, Director of Church Relations at Chapman University in Orange,
CA, sent me an article last week that I want to pass on to you. Chapman
was founded by Disciples and we have a very strong student ministry
there. The article highlights a special Chapman scholarship available to
all first-generation students-students who are the first in their
family to go to college. This financial support has benefited many
Disciples on Campus students in the past and will do so in the future.
If you are aware of anyone who fits the criteria for this scholarship
(see article below) and may be interested in attending Chapman, please have them contact Nancy Brink or Cisa Payuyo at 714-997-6760. Disciples students automatically receive additional scholarship support.
Chapman
University's outstanding efforts to attract first-generation students
and other underserved populations has earned it a spot in the new Center
for Student Opportunity's 2011 College Access & Opportunity Guide.
The publication is a comprehensive college guidebook that highlights
universities that make exceptional efforts to create supportive programs
and environments for low-income, first-generation college-bound
students.
Inclusion in the guidebook is an honor and recognition of
the university's longstanding commitment to assisting first-generation
college students, said Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief Admission
Officer Michael Drummy.
"Chapman's inclusion in the Center for
Student Opportunity's 2011 College Access and Opportunity Guide is the
result of our extensive efforts to reach out to disadvantaged students
through a variety of programs both on and off campus, as well as our
Thurgood Marshall Scholars program, which helps fund students who would
be the first from their immediate family to attend college," Drummy
said.
The Thurgood Marshall Scholars program was established in the
mid-1980's, and about 40 students a year receive assistance from it as
part of their financial aid and/or scholarship package, Drummy added.
The
Center for Student Opportunity (CSO) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization dedicated to promoting higher-education opportunities for
first-generation and other historically underserved college-bound
students. CSO programs serve colleges and universities, counselors and
community-based organizations in support of their college access goals.

Whittier, CA 90604This committee, for almost two years, has studied, prayed and talked to one another about the best way to create a space for a sacred and holy conversation about how we can have fundamental disagreements while still sharing table fellowship with one another. We know there are multiple perspectives in the involvement of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Disciples in the life of our church and region. For our conversation, we have decided to use the "World Cafe" methodology to discuss this topic. The primary reason for our selection of this approach is that, by its nature, it is about having personal, "knee to knee conversations" with the emphasis on discussion and understanding and not on debate or attempts to convince others of individual positions. It is centered on a sharing by individuals in multiple small groups. In summary, the committee has been united in the desire to make this an opportunity that does not seek to change minds; only potentially expand understanding of our brothers and sisters who hold different perspectives other than our own. Sacred Conversation are intended to bring understanding about how we may have strong and different opinions and still share a strong and sacred fellowship as brothers and sisters in Christ.
Who: All Pastors/Clergy in the Pacific Southwest Region
Purpose: To create a safe environment for participants to hear the stories and views
of others with the goal of broadening understanding, not necessarily
changing minds. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be awarded
for participation.

Filipino American Experience: Historical Book: The Making of A historic Cultural Monument
 This book chronicles the experiences of Filipinos in the early 1920s and 30s, who came in droves to America attracted to the agricultural jobs in Central California and the sunbelt states. They were also in demand in the salmon and fish cannery industries of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Most of them were single, ambitious, young men from poor families who were mainly interested in accumulating as much wealth as possible and then return to their homeland as rich men. In some cases, they also wanted to get an education.
In the "Land of the Free" with signs that read "No Filipinos Allowed", Filipinos became the victims of racism, deplorable living conditions, job discrimination, exploitation and isolation from mainstream society. They were legally excluded from owning property or marrying whom they wish because of the color of their skin. They were not allowed in many places, not even in churches.
However, in 1928, the Disciples of Christ hosted a world convention in the city, which led to the creation of the Filipino Christian Fellowship, the first organization in the United States to address the spiritual needs of early Filipinos.
In 1933, with the help of several Disciples missionaries, it evolved as the Filipino Christian Church. For the next half century, this church had a vital role in the advancement of the Filipino American community in Los Angeles. In 1998, the City of Los Angeles designated the Filipino Christian Church as a historic cultural monument for its contributions to the cultural development of the city and its significance to its history.
This book salutes the important role that the Disciples of Christ and its leaders, as well as the many members and friends of the church played at pivotal points in our history.
