Dear Friends:
Lunch & Learn is this week, and I want to remind everyone of the location change for the second half of the year! Wednesday, June 23rd at noon: 'What You Need to Know about Sleep', with Mary O'Sullivan and Kathy Ohlmann. They will discuss what happens during sleep, how sleep affects us, and sleep disorders related to PD. You will also learn about sleep apnea, insomnia and restless leg syndrome--all of which can present as symptoms for people with PD. No RSVP required; bring your lunch and we will provide drinks and desserts! We will meet at Jeffersonville Township Public Library in the General Purpose Room (211 E Court Ave, Jeffersonville IN 47130). If you're coming from Louisville across the Kennedy Bridge, take exit zero and turn right at the light at the end of the ramp onto Court Avenue. After the intersection with Spring Street, begin looking to your left for the library (the post office is next to it!). Take a left onto Locust to access the parking lot. When you come into the building, turn right. The room overlooks the parking lot.
Today is the first day of summer. We're going to have a little (or a big?!) picnic on Friday, July 2nd from 10am-2pm at George Rogers Clark Park (across from Norton Audubon Hospital on Poplar Level Road). The event will be held rain or shine. EVERYONE in the community is welcome. We ask that you bring a dish to share, your favorite board or lawn game to play, good shoes for walking if you wish to hike in the park and LOTS of friends! The event will be held RAIN or SHINE; we have rented the lodge, which has tables, chairs, couches and a kitchen and can hold up to 100. PLEASE RSVP so we know you're coming to 502-426-0888 or info@pscky.org. Thanks!
We have just received a Wii sports console and Wii Fit balance board for our lending library. You may check out these items for 30 days (use at your own risk!), and items must be picked up and delivered back to the PSCKY office.
Speaking of exercise, this is your last chance to give us input on a more challenging exercise support group for people with Parkinson's disease. Take the survey here! We appreciate the 22 people who have given us their input so far, and look forward to launching this new group soon!
Many of you have already given us your feedback on your neurological care, but so many new folks have joined this e-news, that we thought it right to extend a new invitation to take the survey on neurological care. Surveys such as these help us--as an organization--shape programs, have conversations with other organizations and improve the quality of services available in Kentucky and Indiana for people with PD. Thank you for your input!
We were sad to hear of the passing of our friends Duncan LeCompte and Bud Mooser; our thoughts are with their families.
Wishing you well this week,
Jinn Fuller Renfro
Executive Director
PS: Here are a couple of new pictures to share! Remember, "Let's Dance" still has openings in the new session. Call Katherine at 502-426-0888 to register! There's also a new short film out about the benefits of dance for people with PD: "My Angel, My Hero."
Participants from the first session of "Let's Dance" receive awards! | Participants in the newly formed Henry County support group enjoy their first meeting. |

LEXINGTON STUDY TAKING PARTICIPANTS
We've been learning a lot recently about clinical trials, thanks in large part to our friend and PWP Karen deGraaf. I hope you've enjoyed her recent articles as much as I have! The University of Kentucky is studying a link between
Parkinson's disease and depression. Depression is a common and potentially serious complication of
Parkinson's disease. The University of
Kentucky is looking for patients with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease who
have depression for a neuroimaging research study. This study is not a
treatment study, but qualified participants will be compensated for their time
and travel. The study is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. For more information, contact Chris Miara at
859-257-9223 ex. 2 or visit www.mc.uky.edu/parkinson_imaging. |

KNOW THE SIGNS OF ABUSE/EXPLOITATION!
Elder abuse, neglect and exploitation are largely
under-reported and under-recognized throughout the world, said Steven Fisher,
manager of the Adult Safety Branch, part of the CHFS Department for Community
Based Services (DCBS).
Reporting suspected abuse or neglect is Kentucky law, and it's confidential. Fisher said that DCBS received more than 12,000 reports of
abuse, neglect and exploitation of people age 60 and older for state fiscal
year 2009.
Learn to recognize the following signs of neglect and abuse.
Neglect ─ Obvious malnutrition, dehydration ─ Dirty and uncombed hair, dirty and torn or
climate-inappropriate clothes, offensive body odor ─ Hoarding ─ Lack of glasses, dentures or hearing aid or lack of
medical care ─ Bedsores ─ Recent suffering or loss of spouse, family members or
close friends Physical Abuse ─ Frequent injuries such as bruises, burns, broken bones;
explanation of the injury seems unrealistic ─ Multiple bruises in various stages of healing,
particularly bruises on inner arms or thighs ─ Pain on being touched ─ Loss of bowel and bladder control ─ Never leaves the house; never allows visitors ─ Never mentions family or friends Sexual Abuse ─ Evidence of sexually transmitted disease ─ Irritation or injuries to the mouth, genitals or anus ─ Upset when changed or bathed ─ Fearful of a particular person ─ Loss of bowel and bladder control Emotional/Psychological Abuse ─ Isolated from family and friends ─ Sudden dramatic change in behavior: appears withdrawn,
depressed, hesitant to talk openly ─ Caregiver won't let victim speak for herself or himself ─ Caregiver scolds, insults, threatens victim ─ Trembling, clinging Financial Abuse ─ Unusual activity in bank account; sudden large
withdrawals, expenditures that are not consistent with past financial history ─ Use of automated teller machines (ATM) when the person has
no history of using ATMs or cannot walk ─ A recent will, when the person seems incapable of writing
a will ─ Rights signed away on legal papers without understanding
what the papers mean ─ Unpaid bills, such as house payment, rent, taxes,
utilities
If you believe an elderly person is being abused, neglected
or exploited, call (800) 752-6200, Kentucky's abuse hotline, or Indiana's hotline at 1-800-992-6978. If you
believe
there is imminent risk, immediately call 911 or local law enforcement.

BENEFITS OF MASSAGE FOR PD
Many people with PD experience back and other pain. Some people find that massage therapy is beneficial in improving discomfort. Some of the benefits? - Stress reduction
- Improvement in muscle flexibility
- Increased circulation
- Improvement in sleep
Here's some tips related to massage: - Makes sure the therapist graduated from a certified school and is licensed and certified. Two sites for finding a therapist in your area are the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork and the American Massage Therapy Association.
- Check with your doctor to see if he or she feels massage would be right for you.
- Check with your health care provider. Some insurance carriers are recognizing the benefits of massage and may help cover fees (which generally range between $30-60/hour).
- Understand that massage is not just a "luxury" but might greatly improve your quality of life.
